along with the formation of multiple ice leads, followed by the separation of large areas of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/environment-climate-change\/services\/ice-forecasts-observations\/latest-conditions\/glossary.html#wsglossaryF\"><strong>fast ice<\/strong><\/a> within the eastern third of the satellite scene.<\/p>\n<p>Much of this fast ice separation was the result of wind stress, shown by the easterly\/northeasterly winds that prevailed during the period at Cape Perry <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/05\/230526_230529_CZCP_SFCMG.GIF\"><strong>CZCP<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; which included gusts in excess of 30 knots on <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/05\/230527_CZCP_SFCMG.GIF\"><strong>27 May<\/strong><\/a> as an <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/05\/230527_230528_meanSeaLevelPressureAnomaly_anim.gif\"><strong>anomalously deep<\/strong><\/a> low pressure moved eastward across the Northwest Territories into Nunavut (not surprisingly, the most significant areal extent of fast ice separation also occurred on 27 May).<\/p>\n<p>A comparison of Suomi-NPP VIIRS <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/JPSSQuickGuide_Ice_Concentration_2022.pdf\"><strong>Sea Ice Concentration<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/JPSSQuickguide_Ice_thickness.pdf\"><strong>Sea Ice Thickness<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/JPSSQuickguide_IceSurfaceT.pdf\"><strong>Sea Ice Temperature<\/strong><\/a> derived products viewed using <a href=\"http:\/\/realearth.ssec.wisc.edu\"><strong>RealEarth<\/strong><\/a> <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> showed ice conditions on Day 1 of this 4-day period, before the stronger easterly winds on Day 2 led to more widespread development of ice leads and a separation of fast ice.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 1930px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/05\/230527_0000utc_snpp_viirs_seaIceConcentration_seaIceThickness_seaIceTemperature_Amundsen_Gulf_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/05\/230527_0000utc_snpp_viirs_seaIceConcentration_seaIceThickness_seaIceTemperature_Amundsen_Gulf_anim.gif\" width=\"1920\" height=\"962\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi-NPP VIIRS Sea Ice Concentration (%), Sea Ice Thickness (m) and Sea Ice Temperature (K) derived products at 0000 UTC on 27 May [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>Probed values of those parameters over an area of fast ice that had not yet been fractured and separated <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicated a Sea Ice Thickness of 1.57 m, a Sea Ice Temperature of 269.14 K and a Sea Ice Concentration of 99% at that particular location.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1930px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/05\/230527_0000utc_snpp_viirs_sea_ice_parameter_values.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/05\/230527_0000utc_snpp_viirs_sea_ice_parameter_values.png\" width=\"1920\" height=\"962\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Probed values of Sea Ice Concentration (%), Sea Ice Thickness (m) and Sea Ice Temperature (K) over an area of fast ice [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Suomi-NPP VIIRS Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) images over the 4-day period from 26-29 May 2023 (above) displayed the anomalously low ice concentration (source) within a portion of Canada&#8217;s Amundsen Gulf &#8212;
