{"id":52658,"date":"2023-05-26T21:59:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-26T21:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=52658"},"modified":"2023-05-30T12:50:26","modified_gmt":"2023-05-30T12:50:26","slug":"2-people-struck-by-lightning-on-a-colorado-springs-golf-course-lightningcast-lead-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/52658","title":{"rendered":"2 people struck by lightning on a Colorado Springs golf course; LightningCast lead time"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 1725px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/05\/230526_goes16_infrared_glmFlashExtentDensity_lightningCastProbability_Colorado_Springs_CO_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/05\/cos_ltg-20230526_213617.png\" width=\"1715\" height=\"830\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 &#8220;Clean&#8221; Infrared Window (10.3 \u00b5m) images, with\/without an overlay of GLM Flash Extent Density and contours of LightningCast Probability [click to play animated GIF| <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/05\/230526_goes16_infrared_glmFlashExtentDensity_lightningCastProbability_Colorado_Springs_CO_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>\n<p>2 people were hospitalized after being struck by lightning on a Colorado Springs golf course (<a href=\"https:\/\/gazette.com\/news\/local\/2-hurt-in-lightning-strike-at-colorado-springs-golf-course\/article_612637b0-fc81-11ed-b02b-2b3cd852f29b.html\"><strong>media report<\/strong><\/a>) around 2140 UTC on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20230526.html\"><strong>26 May 2023<\/strong><\/a>. 5-minute GOES-16\u00a0<em>(GOES-East)<\/em> \u201cClean\u201d Infrared Window (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band13.pdf\"><strong>10.3 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images\u00a0<em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed thunderstorms that were increasing in coverage\/intensity as they moved northeastward toward the Colorado Springs area (eventually producing <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/05\/cos_lsr_ltg-20230526_215117.png\"><strong>1.00-inch-diameter hail<\/strong><\/a>) &#8212; and <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/severe_conv\/pltg.html\"><strong>Lightning Cast<\/strong><\/a> Probability values over Colorado Springs began to steadily increase after 1901 UTC, reaching or exceeding 50%\/75%\/<strong>90%<\/strong> at 2021 UTC\/2046 UTC\/<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/05\/230526_2056utc_cos_lcast.png\"><strong>2056 UTC<\/strong><\/a> respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The occurrence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/spacesegment\/glm.html\"><strong>GLM<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/quick_guides\/GLM_Quick_Guide_Gridded_Products_June_2018.pdf\"><strong>Flash Extent Density<\/strong><\/a> pixels directly over Colorado Springs began at 2121 UTC &#8212; 25 minutes after the initial 90% LightningCast value, 35 minutes after the initial 75% LightningCast value and 60 minutes after the initial 50% LightningCast value. Decision support for outdoor events benefits from the lead time offered by the LightningCast tool.<\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The LightningCast webite (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/severe_conv\/pltg.html\">here<\/a>) includes a &#8216;Lightning Meteogram&#8217; tool for airports within the USA and Canada; the one for the Colorado Springs CO airport (KCOS) for this event is shown below for both GOES-16 CONUS data (left) and GOES-18 PACUS\/Meso (right) &#8212; a GOES-18 Mesoscale sector was over Colorado during this event.
