With that particular storm a lightning jump began around 2135 UTC and peaked at 2142 UTC, and the coldest cloud-top infrared brightness temperature of -55.58\u00baC occurred at 2145 UTC &#8212; both during the minutes leading up to the tornado, which formed at 2148 UTC.The coldest <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_BaselineCloudTopTemperature.pdf\"><strong>Cloud Top Temperature<\/strong><\/a> derived product (which also occurred at 2145 UTC) was about 0.9\u00baC colder, at <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/04\/230430_2145utc_goes16_infrared_cloudTopTemperature_VA.png\"><strong>-56.49\u00baC<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A plot of <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/04\/230501_0000utc_kwal_raob_data.text\"><strong>rawinsonde data<\/strong><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/exper\/soundings\/\"><strong>source<\/strong><\/a>) from Wallops, Virginia at 0000 UTC on 01 May <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> indicated that the -56.49\u00baC Cloud Top Temperature value roughly corresponded to a Most Unstable air parcel Equilibrium Level (MU EL) overshoot of about 1 km.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 1194px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/04\/230501_00utc_kwal_raob.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/04\/230501_00utc_kwal_raob.png\" width=\"1184\" height=\"827\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plot of rawinsonde data from Wallops, Virginia at 0000 UTC on 01 May 2023 [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div><br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 1725px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/04\/230430_2147utc_goes16_visible_infrared_glmFlashExtentDensity_VA_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/04\/230430_2147utc_goes16_visible_infrared_glmFlashExtentDensity_VA_anim.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1715\" height=\"830\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 \u201cRed\u201d Visible (0.64 \u00b5m), \u201cClean\u201d Infrared Window (10.3 \u00b5m) and GLM Flash Extent Density images at 2147 UTC [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>A toggle between GOES-16 Visible, Infrared and GLM Flash Extent Density images at 2147 UTC <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed that the thunderstorm responsible for the 2148-2153 UTC tornado &#8212; whose SW-to-NE track was from Lynnhaven to Cape Henry &#8212; was apparently located just offshore (centered over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel).
