Isolated clusters of brief lightning activity were seen across the region, but there were no reports of thundersnow. A number of locations in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin received <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/03\/230325_pns_snowfall.text\"><strong>heavy snowfall<\/strong><\/a>, with several new <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/03\/230325_rer_snowfall.text\"><strong>daily records<\/strong><\/a> being set.<\/p>\n<p>The corresponding 1-minue GOES-16 &#8220;Clean&#8221; Infrared Window (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band13.pdf\"><strong>10.3 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images below helped to highlight areas of mesoscale banding where precipitation rates were enhanced (some sites reported snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour).<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 1725px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/03\/230325_goes16_infrared_Upper_Midwest_anim.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/03\/mw_ir-20230325_140554.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1715\" height=\"830\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 &#8220;Clean&#8221; Infrared Window (10.3 \u00b5m) images, with 15-minute METAR surface reports plotted in red [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>Later in the day, as clouds cleared along the back edge of the storm system, much of the southwest-to-northeast swath of fresh snow cover was revealed in GOES-16 <a href=\"https:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/quick_guides\/QuickGuide_DaySnowFogRGB_final_v2.pdf\"><strong>Day Snow-Fog RGB<\/strong><\/a> images (darker shades of red) and <a href=\"https:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/quick_guides\/QuickGuide_DayCloudPhaseDistinction_final_v2.pdf\"><strong>Day Cloud Phase Distinction RGB<\/strong><\/a> images (brighter shades of green).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1725px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/03\/230325_goes16_daySnowFogRGB_dayCloudPhaseDistinctionRGB_Upper_Midwest_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/03\/mw_rgb-20230325_201616.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1715\" height=\"830\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 Day Snow-Fog RGB and Day Cloud Phase Distinction RGB images [click to play animated GIF | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/03\/230325_goes16_daySnowFogRGB_dayCloudPhaseDistinctionRGB_Upper_Midwest_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Microwave estimates of snowfall rate (SFR) are available <a href=\"http:\/\/cics.umd.edu\/sfr\/?page=mSFR-CONUS\">at this website<\/a>, and imagery during the day on the 25th are shown below.
