{"id":51159,"date":"2023-03-17T17:43:20","date_gmt":"2023-03-17T17:43:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=51159"},"modified":"2023-03-20T18:48:36","modified_gmt":"2023-03-20T18:48:36","slug":"polar-hyperspectral-soundings-in-a-numerical-model-and-the-hazardous-weather-testbed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/51159","title":{"rendered":"Polar Hyperspectral Soundings in a Numerical Model and the Hazardous Weather Testbed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This is the first in a series of posts on the 2023 version of PHSnMWnABI modeling.  <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\">CIMSS<\/a> this year will again be supplying output to the Hazardous Weather Testbed (<a href=\"https:\/\/hwt.nssl.noaa.gov\/\">HWT<\/a>, from late May through mid-June 2023) from a modeling system that includes Polar Hyperspectral Soundings (Infrared and Microwave) that are fused with ABI data (refer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spiedigitallibrary.org\/journals\/journal-of-applied-remote-sensing\/volume-13\/issue-03\/034506\/Imager-and-sounder-data-fusion-to-generate-sounder-retrieval-products\/10.1117\/1.JRS.13.034506.full?SSO=1\">to this paper<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2072-4292\/14\/21\/5327\">this one<\/a> on Data Fusion).  Blog Posts on the efficacy of this modeling system from last year&#8217;s HWT can be viewed <a href=\"http:\/\/goesrhwt.blogspot.com\/search\/label\/PHSnMWnABI\">here<\/a>.  Model run output is available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/hufusion\/forecast-plots\/\">at this website<\/a> where you will see a calendar.  Choose the day to view.  Consider the 500-mb analysis shown below, at 1700 UTC from the 1200 UTC run on 17 March, when a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/products\/outlook\/archive\/2023\/day1otlk_20230317_1630.html\">slight risk of severe weather over the central Gulf Coast<\/a> was forecast by the <a href=\"http:\/\/spc.noaa.gov\">Storm Prediction Center<\/a>.  The strongest convection stretched southwest to northeast across extreme southeastern Louisiana into southwestern Alabama &#8212; the forecast convection has not yet reached Mobile. There are similarities between the forecast above and reality below.  Convection hasn&#8217;t reached Mobile;  an area of lingering showers persists over southeast Texas.
