This storm produced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/storm_summaries\/storm13\/stormsum_5.html\"><strong>heavy snowfall<\/strong><\/a> and high winds across much of the Northeast US (including a <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/03\/230315_230316_KMWN_SFCMG.GIF\"><strong>gust to 81 knots<\/strong><\/a> or 93 mph at Mt. Washington NH).<\/p>\n<p>As the system was beginning to intensify off the coast of North Carolina on 13 March, 1-minute Mesoscale Domain Sector GOES-16 True Color RGB images from the <a href=\"https:\/\/geosphere.ssec.wisc.edu\/#playing:true;coordinate:0,0;num_frames:40;\"><strong>CSPP GeoSphere<\/strong><\/a> site <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> revealed the hazy signature of enhanced solar reflection off an agitated sea surface (where high waves and abundant sea spray were present) &#8212; the likely result of a burst of strong middle-tropospheric winds that had descended to the surface (just south of the surface low pressure center).
