(Note that the default color scale for Total Precipitable Water (TPW) has been rescaled so the &#8220;dryest&#8221; value is 1.0 inches).  The Samoan islands are just at the northern edge of the deepest moisture &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.uwyo.edu\/cgi-bin\/sounding?region=pac&amp;TYPE=GIF%3ASKEWT&amp;YEAR=2023&amp;MONTH=03&amp;FROM=1212&amp;TO=1412&amp;STNM=91765\">observed TPW at the Pago Pago sounding<\/a> has decreased from 55 mm at 1200 UTC on 12 March to 44 mm at 1200 UTC on 14 March, the start of the animation above.  MIMIC Total Precipitable water for the 24 hours ending 1300 UTC on 14 March, below, (<a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/real-time\/mtpw2\/product.php?color_type=tpw_nrl_colors&amp;prod=spac&amp;timespan=24hrs&amp;anim=anigf\">source<\/a>) shows dryer air very slowly moving over the Samoan islands from the north and northeast.   (SAR and Scatterometry surface winds are all northerly around Samoa, as shown in <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/51076\">this blog post<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/03\/mimictpw_spac_24h_ending_1300UTC_14March2023.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"470\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/03\/mimictpw_spac_24h_ending_1300UTC_14March2023.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-51090\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Diagnosed Total Precipitable Water (from MIcrowave imagery), 1400 UTC 13 March 2023 &#8211; 1300 UTC 14 March 2023 (Click to enlarge)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<p>A Suomi-NPP VIIRS Day\/Night Band (0.7 \u00b5m) image valid at 1252 UTC is shown below &#8212; ample illumination from the Moon (in the Waning Gibbous phase, at 56% of Full) provided a useful &#8220;visible image at night&#8221;. The toggle below shows imagery from the SSEC\/CIMSS tropical weather site (<a href=\"https:\/\/ropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/\">link<\/a>). Shear values are low and Sea Surface Temperatures are warm.
