{"id":50875,"date":"2023-03-02T05:59:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-02T05:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=50875"},"modified":"2023-03-03T17:13:17","modified_gmt":"2023-03-03T17:13:17","slug":"satellite-signatures-of-a-nasa-spacex-crew-6-launch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/50875","title":{"rendered":"Satellite signatures of the NASA\/SpaceX Crew-6 launch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div style=\"width: 1725px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/03\/230302_goes16_30second_bands_01_16_plumeRGB_Crew6_launch_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/03\/sx_b08-20230302_053625.png\" width=\"1715\" height=\"830\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 images from all 16 ABI spectral bands [click to play animated GIF | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/03\/230302_goes16_30second_bands_01_16_plumeRGB_Crew6_launch_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>Overlapping 1-minute Mesoscale Domain Sectors provided GOES-16\u00a0<em>(GOES-East)<\/em> images at 30-second intervals from all 16 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/spacesegment\/abi.html\"><strong>ABI<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0spectral bands\u00a0<em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em>, which displayed the northeast-moving warm thermal signature of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket booster as the Crew-6 Mission was launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 0534 UTC (12:34 AM EST) on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20230302.html\"><strong>02 March 2023<\/strong><\/a>. The low-altitude rocket launch condensation cloud was also evident in imagery from the Infrared bands (07-16), drifting slowly eastward away from the launch site. One or both of these rocket launch signatures were detected by all 16 of the ABI spectral bands, as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/QuickGuide_GOESR_RocketPlumeRGB.pdf\"><strong>Plume RGB<\/strong><\/a> images &#8212; although the nighttime reflectance values in Visible bands 01 and 02 were quite small (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/03\/230302_0534utc_goes16_bands01_06_cursor_sample.png\"><strong>cursor sample<\/strong><\/a>), and difficult to discern using the default Visible enhancement (unless one zoomed in for a much <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/03\/230302_goes16_band02_zoom_Crew6_launch_anim.gif\"><strong>closer view<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>GOES-16 images from ABI spectral bands 07-09 along with the Night Plume RGB <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> later displayed a thermal signature of the Falcon 9 Stage 1 entry burn at 0541 UTC well off the coast of South Carolina, which slowed its rate of descent back toward the surface (for a recovery landing on an offshore drone ship).<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 1725px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/03\/230302_goes16_30second_band07_09_plumeRGB_Falcon9_Stage1_entry_burn_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/03\/eb_b09-20230302_054155.png\" width=\"1715\" height=\"830\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 images from ABI spectral bands 07-09 along with the Night Plume RGB [click to play animated GIF | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/03\/230302_goes16_30second_band07_09_plumeRGB_Falcon9_Stage1_entry_burn_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>For this Stage 1 entry burn, close-up 16-panel images from each of the 16 ABI spectral bands <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed that reflectance and\/or thermal signatures were detected by nearly all of the bands (except 13, 14 and 15) &#8212;
