Note that toward the end of the animation on 10 September, a plume of dry continental air <em>(TPW values of 30-40 mm, blue to cyan enhancement)<\/em> was entrained into the circulation of downgraded Tropical Depression  Gabrielle as the cyclone moved away from the US East Coast.<\/p>\n<p>As Gabrielle began to move northeastward across the Atlantic Ocean, it traveled along the north wall of the Gulf Stream &#8212;  the warm waters in that region likely helped to prolong Gabrielle&#8217;s duration at tropical depression intensity. An 8-day composite of MODIS Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> revealed that water temperatures along the axis of the Gulf Stream were still as warm as 83\u00c2\u00ba F (28\u00c2\u00baC)  during early September.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/09\/070910_modis_sst_2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"MODIS sea surface temperatures\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/09\/070910_modis_sst_2.jpg\" title=\"MODIS sea surface temperatures\" alt=\"MODIS sea surface temperatures\" align=\"middle\" height=\"482\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>==============================================<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/09\/070910_modis_aod.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"MODIS Aerosol Optical Depth\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/09\/070910_modis_aod.jpg\" alt=\"MODIS Aerosol Optical Depth\" height=\"384\" width=\"479\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/idea.ssec.wisc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"IDEA\"><strong>IDEA<\/strong><\/a> MODIS Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) product <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> indicated that the  &#8220;dry air plume&#8221; moving eastward off the US coast also contained elevated levels of particle pollution, which was supported by the large number of surface <a href=\"http:\/\/airnow.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"AirNOW\"><strong>AirNOW<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>sites <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> from Georgia to North Carolina   that reported &#8220;Moderate&#8221; concentrations of particle pollution  (<em>51-100 \u00c2\u00b5g per cubic meter, yellow circles)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/09\/070910_pm25.gif\" title=\"AirNOW PM2.5 data\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/09\/070910_pm25.gif\" title=\"AirNOW PM2.5 data\" alt=\"AirNOW PM2.5 data\" align=\"middle\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The poleward surge of elevated Total Precipitable Water (TPW) values (50-65 mm, orange to red enhancement) associated with Tropical Storm Gabrielle could be clearly seen on an animation of MIMIC TPW covering the 48-hour period from 09 to 10 September 2007 (above).
