ASCAT scatterometry from 0845 UTC on 21 February, above, (<a href=\"https:\/\/manati.star.nesdis.noaa.gov\/\">from this website<\/a>), shows strong northerly winds Equatorward of the Samoan Islands, and weaker winds to the south:  surface convergence is indicated.  The animation below shows GOES-18 Visible imagery overlain on top of GOES-18 K-Index, one of the derived stability indices routinely produced.  At this time, a large area of disturbed weather is located to the east of American Samoa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/02\/G18Band02_KIndex-20230220_1900_to_2350anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1196\" height=\"856\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/02\/G18Band02_KIndex-20230220_1900_to_2350anim.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50653\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">GOES-18 Visible (Band 2, 0.64 \u00b5m) Imagery, 1900 &#8211; 2350 UTC on 20 February 2023 (Click to enlarge) underlain by GOES-18 K Index, one of the GOES-R Level 2 Clear Sky-Only Derived Stability Products<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The disturbed weather was associated with a trackable feature, a lowered tropopause, in gridded NUCAPS fields (<a href=\"https:\/\/weather.msfc.nasa.gov\/cgi-bin\/sportPublishData.pl?dataset=griddednucaps&amp;product=web13_TPH.png&amp;stamp=20230221_2107&amp;loc=spacific#image\">available at this site<\/a>). The lowered tropopause is highlighted in green values below and surrounded by higher tropopause values that are blue\/cyan. Flash Flooding occurred on American Samoa, as <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/02\/NSTUObservations_2100SST_20February_to_0400SST_21February_2023.png\">almost five inches of rain fell at the airport<\/a> between 9 PM and 4 AM Samoa Standard Time (that is, 0800 UTC to 1500 UTC).  In addition, Hawaiian Airlines Flight 465 (from Honolulu to Pago Pago) landed on time &#8212; but lightning prevented passengers from disembarking for 2 hours.  Consequently, the return flight (Hawaiian Airlines Flight 466) <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/02\/HawaiianAirlinesFLT466_20February.png\">was delayed 16 hours<\/a> because of crew time constraint]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another heavy rain event across the islands of American Samoa was documented in <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/40019\">February 2021<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Heavy Rains overspread the Samoan Islands late on 20 February\/early on 21 February 2023.
