(This is part of an <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/50095\">ongoing special collection<\/a> that extends through early March).  As with most previous observations, winds around American Samoa were light.  Consider <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/02\/MetopC_ASCAT_16February2023_WMBds7.png\">these ASCAT observations from MetopC at ca. 2040 UTC on 16 February 2023<\/a>, for example, taken from <a href=\"https:\/\/manati.star.nesdis.noaa.gov\/datasets\/ASCATCData.php\">this site<\/a>.  Observed winds are uniformly around 10 knots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most notable feature in the 0550 UTC winds above is the arc of showers to the northeast of American Samoa, shown below.  Imagery from this time is also available at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov\/socd\/mecb\/sar\/AKDEMO_products\/APL_winds\/wind_images_nic\/sarwinds_daily_now.html?date=20230216\">this website<\/a>, both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov\/socd\/mecb\/sar\/AKDEMO_products\/APL_winds\/wind_images_nic\/2023-02\/RSAT2_GSS_2023_02_16_05_48_09_0729841689_170.37W_14.33S_VV_C5_GFS025CDF_wind.png\">wind fields<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov\/socd\/mecb\/sar\/AKDEMO_products\/APL_winds\/wind_images_nic\/2023-02\/RSAT2_GSS_2023_02_16_05_48_09_0729841689_170.37W_14.33S_VV_C_nrcs.png\">Normalized Radar Cross Section (NRCS) fields<\/a>.
