The majority of these fires appeared\u00c2\u00a0 to be in the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flint_Hills\">Flint Hills region<\/a><\/strong> &#8212; likely the annual prescribed burns that cattle farmers perform in order to remove thatch and weeds that compete with the native grasses, to improve the range land grasses for livestock grazing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>===== 09 April Update =====<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the following day, MODIS true color imagery <strong><em>(below, viewed using <a href=\"http:\/\/ge.ssec.wisc.edu\/\">Google Earth<\/a>)<\/em><\/strong> showed that the ongoing fire activity was beginning to create extensive areas of smoke aloft  from northern Oklahoma to eastern Kansas.
