GOES-12 Rapid Scan Operation (RSO) visible channel imagery at 5-10 minute intervals  <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> shows the low-level circulation of Gabrielle emerging from beneath a quasi-stationary cluster of convection and then  moving slowly north\/northeastward across eastern North Carolina during the afternoon hours. GOES-12 10.7\u00c2\u00b5m IR imagery <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> depicts cold cloud top brightness temperatures of -60\u00c2\u00ba to -79\u00c2\u00ba C <em>(red to black to white enhancement)<\/em> associated with the convective cluster &#8212; these cold cloud tops did manage to move slightly inland across the Morehead City NC region <em>(located near the center of the IR images) <\/em>after about 15 UTC (11 am local time), and the resulting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/tropical\/rain\/gabrielle2007filledrainwhite.gif\" title=\"rainfall amounts (HPC)\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>rainfall amounts<\/strong><\/a> along the coast were as high as <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/08\/070909_kmhx_pns.text\" title=\"KMHX public information statement\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>8.60 inches at Harlowe<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/08\/070909_g12_ir4_anim.gif\" title=\"GOES-12 10.7\u00c2\u00b5m IR images (Animated GIF)\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/08\/070909_g12_ir4_anim.gif\" title=\"GOES-12 10.7\u00c2\u00b5m IR  images (Animated GIF)\" alt=\"GOES-12 10.7\u00c2\u00b5m IR  images (Animated GIF)\" align=\"middle\" height=\"362\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An AWIPS image of the 1-km resolution MODIS 11.0\u00c2\u00b5m IR channel <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> shows better detail in the cloud top temperature structure compared to the 4-km resolution GOES-12 IR imagery above.
