The image above shows both the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov\/socd\/mecb\/sar\/AKDEMO_products\/APL_winds\/wind_images_nic\/2023-02\/RSAT2_GSS_2023_02_02_05_56_26_0728632586_172.35W_14.79S_VV_C5_GFS025CDF_wind.png\">derived winds<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov\/socd\/mecb\/sar\/AKDEMO_products\/APL_winds\/wind_images_nic\/2023-02\/RSAT2_GSS_2023_02_02_05_56_26_0728632586_172.35W_14.79S_VV_C_nrcs.png\">Normalized Radar Cross Section (NRCS)<\/a> from 0556 UTC on 2 February 2023;  Derived winds and NRCS at 1700 UTC on 2 February 2023 are shown below.  At both times, north or northeast winds are indicated. Such ice strongly reflects microwave energy from the SAR satellite and that strong signal is misinterpreted as a strong wind return from the ocean surface. Yes.  <a href=\"https:\/\/wes.copernicus.org\/articles\/5\/1191\/2020\/\">This study<\/a> compared SAR winds to ocean buoys in the Atlantic.
