Winds gusted as high as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/04\/100405_fgz_pns.text\">70 mph<\/a><\/strong> in northeastern Arizona and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/04\/100405_slc_pns.text\">68 mph<\/a><\/strong> in southern Utah <em>(reducing visibility to near zero in some areas, and forcing some road closures)<\/em>. The GOES-12 satellite had been placed into Rapid Scan Operations, allowing imagery to be available as frequently as every 5-10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>An AWIPS image of the POES AVHRR Cloud Top Height product <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> indicated that the tops of the blowing dust plumes in northeastern Arizona at 19:45 UTC <em>(1:45 pm local time)<\/em> were around 1-2 km. <\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/04\/AVHRR_CLD_HGT_20100405_1945.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"POES AVHRR Cloud Top Height product\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/04\/AVHRR_CLD_HGT_20100405_1945.png\" title=\"POES AVHRR Cloud Top Height product\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">POES AVHRR Cloud Top Height product<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>McIDAS images of the GOES-12 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel data (above) showed the development of large plumes of blowing dust that developed late in the day on 05 April 2010 as a result of very strong winds ahead of an advancing cold frontal boundary.
