Particles emitted from industrial stacks acted as cloud condensation nuclei, \u201cseeding\u201d the surrounding <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/01\/230122_1631utc_nearInfraredSnowIce_cloudTopPhase_WI_anim.gif\"><strong>supercooled water<\/strong><\/a> cloud droplets which then created a higher concentration of <strong>smaller<\/strong> cloud droplets \u2014 and these smaller cloud droplets were more efficient reflectors of incoming solar radiation, making the plumes appear slightly brighter than the surrounding clouds.<\/p>\n<p>GOES-16 <a href=\"https:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/quick_guides\/QuickGuide_DaySnowFogRGB_final_v2.pdf\"><strong>Day Snow-Fog RGB<\/strong><\/a> images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> provided a bit more cloud-top contrast, helping to slightly enhance the appearance of the industrial plumes.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1725px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/01\/230122_goes16_daySnowFogRGB_WI_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/01\/wi_rgb_obs-20230122_163117.png\" width=\"1715\" height=\"830\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 Day Snow-Fog RGB images, with and without plots of hourly surface reports [click to play animated GIF | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/01\/230122_goes16_daySnowFogRGB_WI_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GOES-16 (GOES-East) Near-Infrared &#8220;Snow\/Ice&#8221; (1.61 \u00b5m) images (above) displayed industrial plumes (from sources such as power plants) that produced brief periods of light snow as they drifted over a few sites in northern Wisconsin on 22 January 2023.
