Areas that reported thundersnow experienced convectively-enhanced snowfall rates of 2-3 inches per hour; storm total snowfall amounts were as high as 27 inches in southeastern South Dakota and 18 inches in northeastern Nebraska (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/fsd\/20230103-HeavySnow-CWA\"><strong>NWS Sioux Falls event summary<\/strong><\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/01\/230104_wpc_storm_summary.text\"><strong>WPC storm summary<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the cold front associated with this winter storm (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/01\/230103_surface_analyses_CONUS_anim.gif\"><strong>surface analyses<\/strong><\/a>), severe thunderstorms produced tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/climo\/reports\/230103_rpts.html\"><strong>SPC Storm Reports<\/strong><\/a>) from the Upper Midwest to the Deep South. Overlapping GOES-16 Mesoscale Domain Sectors provided imagery at 30-second intervals over parts of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee where some of the severe weather occurred &#8212; \u201cRed\u201d Visible (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band02.pdf\"><strong>0.64 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) and &#8220;Clean&#8221; Infrared Window (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band13.pdf\"><strong>10.3 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images that include time-matched plots of SPC Storm Reports are shown below.
