GOES-17 <em>(GOES-West)<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/quick_guides\/QuickGuide_GOESR_AirMassRGB_final.pdf\"><strong>Air Mass RGB<\/strong><\/a> images <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed the core of the storm (darker shades of orange-red) as well as widespread thunderstorms along and ahead of the storm&#8217;s strong cold front.<\/p>\n<p>GOES-17 Total Precipitable Water and &#8220;Clean&#8221; Infrared Window (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band13.pdf\"><strong>10.3 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> depicted the tropical moisture that was drawn northward across the islands, providing fuel for development of the thunderstorms.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 1725px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/12\/221218_221219_goes17_totalPrecipitableWater_HI_Kona_Low_anim.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/12\/hi_tpw-20221219_122032.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1715\" height=\"830\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-17 Total Precipitable Water and &#8220;Clean&#8221; Infrared Window (10.3 \u00b5m) images [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>A closer view using GOES-17 Infrared images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed the cold cloud-top infrared brightness temperatures associated with the thunderstorm activity &#8212; some of which was responsible for an aircraft encounter with <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/49370\"><strong>severe turbulence<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 1725px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/12\/221218_221219_goes17_infrared_HI_Kona_Low_anim.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/12\/hi_ir2-20221219_122117.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1715\" height=\"830\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-17 &#8220;Clean&#8221; Infrared Window (10.3 \u00b5m) mages [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>On 20 December, a sequence of GOES-17 True Color RGB and Shortwave Infrared (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band07.pdf\"><strong>3.9 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images from the <a href=\"https:\/\/geosphere.ssec.wisc.edu\/#playing:true;coordinate:-176040,-504148;zoom:0.7;num_frames:40;\"><strong>CSPP GeoSphere<\/strong><\/a> site <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed fresh snow cover on the higher elevations of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.
