Surface winds gusted to <strong>84 mph<\/strong> at El Paso in Texas, with the blowing dust temporarily reducing the surface visibility  to <strong>0.1 mile<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>A 250-meter resolution Aqua MODIS true color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) image from the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ge.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php?satellite=a1&#038;product=true_color&#038;date=2010_03_26_085&#038;overlay_sector=false&#038;overlay_state=true&#038;overlay_coastline=true\">SSEC MODIS Today<\/a><\/strong> site <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> revealed  that at the time of the Aqua satellite overpass <em>(20:24 UTC),<\/em> plumes of blowing sand were already beginning to stream northeastward from the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/White_Sands_National_Monument\">White Sands National Monument<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/White_Sands_Missile_Range\">Missile Range<\/a><\/strong> in southern New Mexico &#8212; the blowing sand had already reached the partially snow-covered Sacramento Mountains located to the east of Alamogordo. At that time, the surface visibility at Alamogordo was 5 miles&#8230;but within 3 hours the visibility there dropped to 0.5 mile.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/100326_aqua_modis_truecolor_whitesands_google.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Aqua MODIS true color image (viewed using Google Earth)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/100326_aqua_modis_truecolor_whitesands_google.jpg\" title=\"Aqua MODIS true color image (viewed using Google Earth)\" width=\"480\" height=\"340\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aqua MODIS true color image (viewed using Google Earth)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With the approach of darkness, the GOES-12 (GOES East) visible channel imagery could no longer be utilized to track the location and movement of the thick airborne dust &#8212; however, the older GOES-11 (GOES West) satellite imager instrument still retains a 12.0 \u00c2\u00b5m channel that is helpful for creating a simple 10.7 &#8211; 12.0 \u00c2\u00b5m (channel 04 &#8211; channel 05) IR temperature difference product that is useful for tracking airborne dust <em>(and also volcanic ash)<\/em> at night. Such a  sequence of GOES-11 10.7 &#8211; 12.0 \u00c2\u00b5m images <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> showed that the dust plume <em>(yellow to cyan color enhancement)<\/em> continued to move eastward and northeastward across Texas and into southwestern Oklahoma during the hours after sunset. <\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/100327_g11_irdiff_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"GOES-11 10.7-12.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR temperature difference images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/100327_g11_irdiff_anim.gif\" title=\"GOES-11 10.7-12.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR temperature difference images\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-11 10.7-12.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR temperature difference images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A few hours later, a similar MODIS IR difference product created by subtracting the brightness temperatures of the 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m and 12.0 \u00c2\u00b5m channels <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> showed that the leading  edge of the dust  <em>(yellow color enhancement)<\/em> had moved as far as northern Oklahoma and extreme southern Kansas. Note the &#8220;cleaner&#8221;  appearance of the MODIS IR difference product, a result of the higher spatial resolution (1 km) and improved spectral response of the IR channels on the MODIS instrument compared to the GOES imager.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/100327_MODIS_CH31-32.GIF\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Aqua MODIS 11.0-12.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR temperature difference product\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/100327_MODIS_CH31-32.GIF\" title=\"Aqua MODIS 11.0-12.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR temperature difference product\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aqua MODIS 11.0-12.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR temperature difference product<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/abi\/\">ABI instrument<\/a><\/strong> aboard the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/\">GOES-R satellite<\/a><\/strong> will mark the return of the 12.0 \u00c2\u00b5m channel on the GOES imager, which will allow such phenomena to be more easily identified and tracked.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>McIDAS images of the GOES-12 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel data (above) showed the development of a large plume of blowing dust across parts of southern New Mexico and western Texas late in the day on 26 March 2010.
