The bright area in the 1.61 \u00b5m show regions where very hot lava is emitting detectable amounts of near-infrared radiation.  The area of those hot regions has decreased between 7 and 8 December.  These images were captured from the <a href=\"https:\/\/geosphere.ssec.wisc.edu\/#coordinate:-1870735,2084081;zoom:8.3;satellite:goeswest;coverage:radc;product:C05;\">CSPP Geosphere site<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"800\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1372 \/ 800;\" width=\"1372\" controls loop src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/12\/goeswest_abi_radc_C05_s20221208173617_e20221208183117_f12.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">GOES-West Band 5 imagery, 1736 &#8211; 1831 UTC on 8 December 2022 <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For current information on the current eruption of Mauna Loa, refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/volcanoes\/mauna-loa\/volcano-updates\">this USGS website<\/a>.
