{"id":4893,"date":"2010-03-26T21:18:59","date_gmt":"2010-03-26T21:18:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=4893"},"modified":"2010-05-20T17:29:34","modified_gmt":"2010-05-20T17:29:34","slug":"fire-and-ice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/4893","title":{"rendered":"Fire and Ice in northern Minnesota"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/100426_aqua_modis_truecolor_falsecolor_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS true color and false color images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/100426_aqua_modis_truecolor_falsecolor_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS true color and false color images\" width=\"480\" height=\"380\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS true color and false color images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A comparison of 250-meter resolution MODIS true color and false color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images from the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ge.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php?satellite=a1&#038;product=true_color&#038;date=2010_03_26_085\">SSEC MODIS Today<\/a><\/strong> site <strong><em>(above)<\/em><\/strong> showed a large fire <em>(perhaps a prescribed burn?)<\/em> in a remote area of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_Lake_Indian_Reservation\">Red Lake Indian Reservation<\/a><\/strong>, just to the west of the Upper and Lower Red Lakes in far northern Minnesota on <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20100326.html\">26 March 2010<\/a><\/strong>. On the false color RGB image, the fire hot spot shows up as a large bright red feature &#8212; note the rapid increase in areal coverage of the burn area between the time of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/100326_terra_aqua_modis_falsecolor_anim.gif\">17:04 UTC Terra satellite overpass and the 18:50 UTC Aqua satellite overpass<\/a><\/strong>. The still-frozen lakes appear as varying shades of cyan, while unfrozen bodies of water show up as a much darker blue color. On the true color RGB image, the hazy-looking smoke plume can be seen drifting northward <em>(advected by surface winds from the south that were gusting as high as 29 knots)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/100326_modis_avhrr_goes_swir_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m, POES AVHRR 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m, and GOES-12 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/100326_modis_avhrr_goes_swir_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m, POES AVHRR 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m, and GOES-12 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m, POES AVHRR 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m, and GOES-12 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>AWIPS images of the 1-km resolution MODIS 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m, the 1-km resolution POES AVHRR 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m, and the 4-km resolution GOES-12 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR channel data <strong><em>(above)<\/em><\/strong> shows some important differences in both the location of the hottest pixels <em>(GOES-12 has the fire located farther to the west, in far eastern Pennington county)<\/em> as well as the intensity of the hot spots: the 18:42 UTC MODIS image registered a maximum IR brightness temperature value of <strong>46.5\u00c2\u00ba C<\/strong>, and the 18:48 UTC POES AVHRR image registered a value as high as <strong>54.5\u00c2\u00ba C<\/strong>. At that same time, the cursor readout for the 18:45 UTC GOES-12 image read &#8220;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/100326_g12_swir_nodata.jpg\">NO DATA<\/a><\/strong>&#8221; &#8212; thus demonstrating the value of the 1-km resolution MODIS and POES AVHRR imagery for identifying the exact location of the hottest portion of the fire.<\/p>\n<p>An animation of the 4-km resolution GOES-12 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> did show that the fire hot spot was gradually growing in size, and briefly began to exhibit IR brightness temperature values as high as <strong>37.5\u00c2\u00ba C<\/strong> at 17:45 UTC and <strong>48.0\u00c2\u00ba C<\/strong> at 18:15 UTC &#8212; but then the fire intensity exceeded the AWIPS temperature threshold  and &#8220;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/100326_g12_swir_nodata.jpg\">NO DATA<\/a><\/strong>&#8221; was indicated by the AWIPS cursor readout before the fire hot spot eventually became obscured by a dense cirrus cloud canopy drifting overhead from the southwest..<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/100326_g12_swir_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"GOES-12 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/100326_g12_swir_anim.gif\" title=\"GOES-12 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-12 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The shortwave IR channels on the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/abi\/\">ABI instrument<\/a><\/strong>  aboard the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/\">GOES-R satellite<\/a><\/strong> will have a spatial resolution of 2 km, which should produce images that more closely resemble the 1-km resolution MODIS and POES AVHRR images shown above (further enhancing our fire detection capabilities in the future).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A comparison of 250-meter resolution MODIS true color and false color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images from the SSEC MODIS Today site (above) showed a large fire (perhaps a prescribed burn?) in a remote area of the Red Lake Indian Reservation, just to the west of the Upper and Lower Red Lakes in far northern Minnesota on [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":18,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[22,6,19,34,12,26,45],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-4893","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-avhrr","category-fire-detection","category-goes-12","category-goes-r","category-modis","category-poes","category-redgreenblue-rgb-images"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4893","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/18"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=4893"}],"version-history":[{"count":33,"href":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4893\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":5708,"href":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4893\/revisions\/5708"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=4893"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=4893"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=4893"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
