When a lunar eclipse occurs, as happened early on 8 November 2022, lunar illumination is lost.  The lunar eclipse of 8 November started at 0803 UTC, with totality from 1017 to 1142 UTC, and the eclipse ended 1249 UTC.  (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/blood-moon-lunar-eclipse-november-2022-what-time\">Details are here.<\/a>)  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The toggle above shows <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/11\/SNPP.22312.USA_Composite.DNBD_.4000mLA.jpg\">Suomi NPP<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/11\/n20.22312.USA_Composite.DNBD_.4000mLA.jpg\">NOAA-20 imagery<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/ge.ssec.wisc.edu\/viirs-today\/index.php?satellite=n2&amp;product=DNB&amp;date=2022_11_08_312&amp;overlay_sector=false&amp;overlay_state=true&amp;overlay_coastline=true\">from the VIIRS Today website<\/a>);  when Suomi NPP overflew the east coast  (at around 0700 UTC, viewing Tropical Storm Nicole to the east of Florida) and the midwest (around 0830 UTC), the lunar eclipse had not yet started, or its effects were minimal (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/datacenter\/polar_orbit_tracks\/data\/NPP\/2022\/2022_11_08_312\/NA.gif\">here is a map of Suomi NPP orbital paths<\/a>).  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/datacenter\/polar_orbit_tracks\/data\/JPSS-1\/2022\/2022_11_08_312\/NA.gif\">NOAA-20 overflew the midwest <\/a>90 minutes after Suomi NPP when the Lunar Eclipse was starting to reduce illumination.
