However, note that many more contrails were apparent on the corresponding MODIS 1.4 \u00c2\u00b5m near-IR &#8220;cirrus detection channel&#8221; images <strong>(below)<\/strong>. The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/abi\/\">ABI instrument<\/a><\/strong> on the upcoming <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/\">GOES-R satellite<\/a><\/strong> will contain near-IR channels similar to this MODIS near-IR channel that will enable more accurate cirrus cloud and contrail detection.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/100316_modis_cirrus_ca_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS 1.4 \u00c2\u00b5m near-IR &quot;cirrus detection channel&quot; images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/100316_modis_cirrus_ca_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS 1.4 \u00c2\u00b5m near-IR &quot;cirrus detection channel&quot; images\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 1.4 \u00c2\u00b5m near-IR &quot;cirrus detection channel&quot; images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While none of these contrails appeared to be very cold on  1-km resolution <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/MODIS_IR_20100316_2122.png\">MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR imagery<\/a><\/strong> <em>(none were even near the -20\u00c2\u00ba C IR brightness temperature threshold),<\/em> the 1-km resolution AVHRR Cloud Top Temperature (CTT) product at 20:36 UTC <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> indicated that  portions of a few of the contrails were exhibiting CTT values as cold as -30 to -40\u00c2\u00ba C <em>(darker blue color enhancement)<\/em> &#8212; however, no single  contrail appeared to be cold enough to have completely glaciated along it&#8217;s entire length.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/AVHRR_CTT_20100316_2036.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"AVHRR Cloud Top Temperature product\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/AVHRR_CTT_20100316_2036.png\" title=\"AVHRR Cloud Top Temperature product\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">AVHRR Cloud Top Temperature product<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The  1-km resolution AVHRR Cloud Type Product <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> also indicated that the majority of these contrails were composed of supercooled water droplets <em>(cyan color enhancement),<\/em> although some portions of a few of the contrails were glaciating and being flagged as cirrus <em>(orange color enhancement)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/AVHRR_CLD_TYPE_20100316_2036.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"AVHRR Cloud Type Product\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/AVHRR_CLD_TYPE_20100316_2036.png\" title=\"AVHRR Cloud Type Product\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">AVHRR Cloud Type Product<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The 1-km resolution AVHRR Cloud Top Height (CTH) product <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> showed that segments of the highest contrails had CTH values around 9 km <em>(blue color enhancement)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/AVHRR_CLD_HGT_20100316_2036.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"AVHRR Cloud Top Height product\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/03\/AVHRR_CLD_HGT_20100316_2036.png\" title=\"AVHRR Cloud Top Height product\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">AVHRR Cloud Top Height product<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AWIPS images of the 1-km resolution MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel data (above) showed a hint of a few aircraft contrails over the Southwestern US at 18:03 and 21:22 UTC on 16 March 2010.
