In fact, these storms contributed to a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/fsd\/20220807-recordrainfall-siouxfalls\"><strong>24-hour rainfall record<\/strong><\/a> (5.44 inches) being set at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Much of this record rainfall occurred during the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/08\/220807_KFSD_SFCMG.PNG\"><strong>0600-1300 UTC<\/strong><\/a> period shown by the GOES-16 imagery.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/08\/sd_viirs_ir_lsr.png\"><strong>flash flooding<\/strong><\/a> had been reported in Sioux Falls, a toggle between NOAA-20 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/current-satellite-missions\/currently-flying\/joint-polar-satellite-system\/jpss-mission-and-2\"><strong>VIIRS<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Infrared (11.45 \u00b5m) and GOES-16\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/spacesegment\/abi.html\"><strong>ABI<\/strong><\/a> \u201cClean\u201d Infrared Window (10.35 \u00b5m) images valid at 0826 UTC <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> revealed that the coldest NOAA-20 cloud-top infrared brightness temperatures near Sioux Falls at that time were -83\u00baC, compared to -74\u00baC with GOES-16 (identical color enhancements were applied to both images). The northwestward shift in GOES-16 image cloud-top features was associated with <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/webapps\/parallax\/overview.html\"><strong>parallax<\/strong><\/a> (which in this case was a distance of <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/08\/220807_g16_parallax.png\"><strong>22 km<\/strong><\/a> for a cloud-top height of 50,000 feet).<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/08\/220807_0826utc_noaa20_goes16_infrared_SD_MN_IA_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/08\/220807_0826utc_noaa20_goes16_infrared_SD_MN_IA_anim.gif\" width=\"640\" height=\"310\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">NOAA-20 Infrared Window (11.45 \u00b5m) and GOES-16 \u201cClean\u201d Infrared Window (10.35 \u00b5m) images valid at 0826 UTC [click to enlarge]\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><\/div>The <a href=\"https:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/real-time\/mtpw2\/product.php?color_type=tpw_nrl_colors&amp;prod=global2&amp;timespan=24hrs&amp;anim=html5\"><strong>MIMIC Total Precipitable Water<\/strong><\/a> product at 0300, 0600, 0900 and 1200 UTC &#8212; visualized using <a href=\"http:\/\/realearth.ssec.wisc.edu\"><strong>RealEarth<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; is shown below.
