Low clouds (purple and pink) occasionally developed overnight into showers (dark red) that then dissipated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NOAA-20 overflew the Samoan islands at around 1200 UTC on 8 July, as shown in the toggle below with GOES-17&#8217;s clean window imagery (10.3 \u00b5m).  The <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/07\/G17Band13-20220708_123431.png\">clean window imagery<\/a> (as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/07\/N20_DNB-20220708_123431.png\">NOAA-20&#8217;s Day Night Band visible imagery<\/a>) show no organized or large areas of precipitation, although some cold cloud tops suggest a few showers to the west of Samoa at 1230 UTC.  The location of NUCAPS profiles are shown.  These profiles can be used to create gridded horizontal fields of thermodynamic variables (available in AWIPS, and also at <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.msfc.nasa.gov\/cgi-bin\/sportPublishData.pl?dataset=griddednucaps&amp;product=web10_QUAL.png&amp;stamp=20220708_1214&amp;loc=spacific#image\">this site<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/07\/G17Band13NUCAPSPoints-20220708_1234toggle.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"964\" height=\"498\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/07\/G17Band13NUCAPSPoints-20220708_1234toggle.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-47130\" \/><\/a><figcaption>GOES-17 Clean Window infrared (10.3 \u00b5m) imagery along with NUCAPS Sounding Availability points, all ca. 1230 UTC on 8 July 2022.  The location of two cross-sections are shown as well (Click to enlarge)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Samoan islands are within a narrow band of enhanced total precipitable water, as shown in the MIMIC Total Precipitable Water fields below (<a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/real-time\/mtpw2\/product.php?color_type=tpw_nrl_colors&amp;prod=spac&amp;timespan=24hrs&amp;anim=html5\">current data<\/a>;  <a href=\"https:\/\/ftp.ssec.wisc.edu\/pub\/mtpw2\/images\/tpw_nrl_colors\/spac\/202207\/\">archive data<\/a>).  As noted above, no <em>organized<\/em> shower activity is associated with this moist band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/07\/MIMIC_TPW2comp20220708.1000_to_1400anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"470\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/07\/MIMIC_TPW2comp20220708.1000_to_1400anim.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-47134\" \/><\/a><figcaption>MIMIC Total Precipitable Water estimates, 1000 &#8211; 1400 UTC on 8 July 2022 (Click to enlarge)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cross-Section lines J-J&#8217; and E-E&#8217; are represented in the GOES-17 imagery, and cross-sections of equivalent potential temperature from gridded NUCAPS Fields and from the 1-degree Global GFS model are shown below.  The J-J&#8217; cross-sections are similar:  Strong low-level Potential Instability at the edges with a weaker low-level potential instability in the center of the cross-section.  The 1200 UTC Sounding from Pago Pago is shown <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.uwyo.edu\/cgi-bin\/sounding?region=pac&amp;TYPE=GIF%3ASKEWT&amp;YEAR=2022&amp;MONTH=07&amp;FROM=0812&amp;TO=0812&amp;STNM=91765\">here<\/a>, from <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.uwyo.edu\/upperair\/sounding.html\">this site<\/a>.
