GOES-13 visible imagery <em><strong>(above; <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/08\/070813_g13_vis.html\" title=\"GOES-13 visible images (Java animation)\" target=\"_blank\">Java animation<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em> showed  smoke <em>(from the previous day of burning)<\/em> that was trapped in the valleys during the morning hours&#8230;with a transition to rapid  smoke plume growth as southwesterly boundary layer winds increased and new fire activity flared up during the afternoon and evening hours.<\/p>\n<p>GOES-12 visible imagery <em><strong>(below; <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/08\/070813_g12_vis.html\" title=\"GOES-12 visible images (Java animation)\" target=\"_blank\">Java animation<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em> showed that smoke from previous days of burning had been transported as far eastward as Wisconsin and the western Great Lakes region on 13 August.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/08\/070813_G12_VIS_40.GIF\" title=\"GOES-12 visible image\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/08\/070813_G12_VIS_40.GIF\" title=\"GOES-12 visible image\" alt=\"GOES-12 visible image\" align=\"middle\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/08\/070813_modis_aod.png\" title=\"MODIS AOD product\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/08\/070813_modis_aod.png\" title=\"MODIS AOD product\" alt=\"MODIS AOD product\" align=\"middle\" height=\"441\" width=\"482\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The extent of the eastward transport of smoke was confirmed using  the MODIS Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) product <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em>, with the thick smoke exhibiting high AOD values of 0.7 to 1.0 <em>(orange to red enhancement)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>MODIS true color imagery <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed a closer view of the smoke <em>(hazy areas)<\/em> that was drifting over Wisconsin and surrounding states during the early afternoon hours &#8212; and the <a href=\"http:\/\/idea.ssec.wisc.edu\/\" title=\"IDEA site\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>IDEA<\/strong><\/a> aerosol  <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/08\/070813_idea_traj_anim.gif\" title=\"IDEA trajectory forecast\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>trajectory forecast<\/strong><\/a> suggested a continuation of smoke  transport aloft across the the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes regions .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eosdb.ssec.wisc.edu\/modisdirect\/aqua\/calibratedImages\/2007\/225\/2007-08-13_1814-1827_WISC_010403_QKM.jpg\" title=\"MODIS true color image\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/eosdb.ssec.wisc.edu\/modisdirect\/aqua\/calibratedImages\/2007\/225\/2007-08-13_1814-1827_WISC_010403_QKM.jpg\" title=\"MODIS true color image\" alt=\"MODIS true color image\" align=\"middle\" height=\"375\" width=\"484\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The thick smoke aloft was responsible for creating a colorful (albeit somewhat muted) sunset &#8212; the photo below was taken in Middleton, Wisconsin, looking west, around 7:45 PM local time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/08\/070813_smoke_sunset_2.jpg\" title=\"smoky sunset in southern Wisconsin\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/08\/070813_smoke_sunset_2.jpg\" title=\"smoky sunset in southern Wisconsin\" alt=\"smoky sunset in southern Wisconsin\" align=\"middle\" height=\"317\" width=\"323\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Large wildfires continued to burn out of control in parts of Idaho and Montana (NOAA HMS product) on 13 August 2007.
