Similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/nmc\/spacecraft\/display.action?id=1974-033A\">SMS-1\/2<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/nmc\/spacecraft\/display.action?id=1977-048A\">GOES-1\/3<\/a>, there were 2 spectral bands: one visible and one <a href=\"https:\/\/glossary.ametsoc.org\/wiki\/Longwave_radiation\">longwave<\/a> infrared.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video autoplay controls loop src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/06\/VIS_IR_NM_1x2_loop_GOES-2_1978167_183000_1978168_013000.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">GOES-2 Visible (left) and Infrared (right) spectral bands from June 16, 1978 over the Eastern portion of the U.S.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A still image with a <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/06\/VIS_IR_G2_1x2_B18_1978167_210000_0002PANELS_FRAME0000012.GIF\">map overlay<\/a> is also available to provide geo-referencing for the images in the above animation. Yet, there were other times when they might have been operating. For example, when an on-orbit spacecraft comes out of storage once a year, often in August, for a routine check-out of several weeks. Another example was GOES-14, as it provided over 5 months of 1 min data (SRSOR) data to better prepare for the meso-scale sectors on the ABI. These campaigns were in <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/srsor\/GOES-14_SRSOR.html\">2012<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/srsor2013\/GOES-14_SRSOR.html\">2013<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/srsor2014\/GOES-14_SRSOR.html\">2014<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/srsor2015\/GOES-14_SRSOR.html\">2015<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/srsor2016\/GOES-14_SRSOR.html\">2016<\/a>. All dates are approximate.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The second timeline above includes not only the U.S. GOES imagers, but also their precursors: ATS-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ATS-1\">1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ATS-3\">3<\/a> (including the <a href=\"http:\/\/library.ssec.wisc.edu\/instrumentation\/SpinScanCloudCamera.html\">Spin Scan Cloud Cameras<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ATS-6\">6<\/a> (with the 2-channel GVHRR; including an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spiedigitallibrary.org\/proceedings\/Download?urlId=10.1117%2F12.817850\">infrared band<\/a>) and SMS-1\/2. The GOES-R Program Office also has a more simple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/imagesContent\/mission\/goesHistory\/History_of_GOES.jpg\">GOES timeline<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UW\/SSEC has <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tiki-toki.com\/timeline\/entry\/457640\/SSEC-Satellite-Meteorology-Timeline\/\" target=\"_blank\">an interactive timeline<\/a> (opens in new tab) that covers more satellites. The visible band is shown, along with cold IR values.<em> (Click to show larger image.)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The above image shows a color-coded transparency for cold clouds over the gray-scale visible image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After GOES-U, NOAA is planning on the next generation U.S. geostationary imager as part of the Geostationary Extended Observations (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/next-generation\/geostationary-extended-observations-geoxo\">GeoXO<\/a>) program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">H\/T<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the many who made the GOES (and the precursors) possible. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/mcidas\/software\/x\/\">McIDAS-X<\/a> software was used in generating these satellite images. The data (and many dates) was accessed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/datacenter\/\">UW\/SSEC Data Services<\/a>.
