{"id":46087,"date":"2022-05-13T14:28:04","date_gmt":"2022-05-13T14:28:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=46087"},"modified":"2022-05-13T17:38:18","modified_gmt":"2022-05-13T17:38:18","slug":"goes-18-abi-imagery-comparisons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/46087","title":{"rendered":"GOES-18 ABI Imagery Comparisons"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/satellites\">NOAA<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/goddard\">NASA<\/a> recently released the first <a href=\"http:\/\/nwafiles.nwas.org\/jom\/articles\/2018\/2018-JOM4\/2018-JOM4.pdf\">ABI<\/a> (Advanced Baseline Imager) imagery from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/news\/earth-orbit-noaa-debuts-first-imagery-goes-18\">GOES-18<\/a>. GOES-T was launched on March 1, 2022. (see the GOES-T launch as <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/44902\">GOES-16 and GOES-17 monitored the rocket signature)<\/a>. GOES-18 is the third (of four) in the GOES-R series and is currently located above the equator at approximately 90W. GOES-18 is slated to become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/users\/transitionToOperations18.html\">NOAA&#8217;s operational GOES-West in early 2023<\/a> after going through extensive post-launch testing. Of course, due to <a href=\"https:\/\/glossary.ametsoc.org\/wiki\/Parallax\">parallax<\/a> and other reasons, there are expected to be differences, especially at larger view angles. The above loop as a <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/05\/loop_16P_G16_G17_G18_4x4_remapped_2022126_18Z_logos.mp4\">mp4<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/05\/loop_16P_G16_G17_G18_4x4_remapped_2022126_18Z_logos.gif\">animated gif<\/a>. The instrument response functions can be found both on  <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/calibration\/\">CIMSS<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ncc.nesdis.noaa.gov\/GOESR\/ABI.php\">Calibration Working Group<\/a> sites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">H\/T<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the many (thousands) who made the GOES-18 ABI possible.
