The fast rate of northeastward growth of the dark burn scar in Visible imagery was particularly striking. Strong winds aided the rapid expansion of this fire, due to the tight pressure gradient between a high over central China and a deepening low that was moving from Siberia to northeastern China (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/04\/220418_220419_Asia_surface_analyses_anim.gif\"><strong>surface analyses<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Consecutive NOAA-20 VIIRS Infrared image <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/datacenter\/polar_orbit_tracks\/data\/JPSS-1\/2022\/2022_04_19_109\/ASIA.gif\"><strong>valid at 0401 UTC and 0541 UTC<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; viewed using <a href=\"http:\/\/realearth.ssec.wisc.edu\"><strong>RealEarth<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> &#8212; showed the eastward drift of individual small <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.ametsoc.org\/view\/journals\/bams\/91\/9\/2010bams3004_1.xml\"><strong>pyrocumulonimbus<\/strong><\/a> (pyroCb) clouds, which exhibited cloud-top infrared brightness temperatures of -40\u00baC and colder (brighter green color enhancement).<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/04\/220419_0344utc_0524utc_noaa20_viirs_infraredWindow_Mongolia_pyroCb_zoom_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/04\/220419_0344utc_0524utc_noaa20_viirs_infraredWindow_Mongolia_pyroCb_zoom_anim.gif\" width=\"640\" height=\"310\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">NOAA-20 VIIRS Infrared Window (11.45 \u00b5m) images at 0401 UTC and 0541 UTC [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>A toggle between NOAA-20 VIIRS True Color RGB and Infrared images at 0541 UTC <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> depicted the dark burn scar as well as the smoke plume with embedded pyroCb clouds.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/04\/220419_0524utc_noaa20_viirs_trueColorRGB_infraredWindow_Mongolia_pyroCb_zoom_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/04\/220419_0524utc_noaa20_viirs_trueColorRGB_infraredWindow_Mongolia_pyroCb_zoom_anim.gif\" width=\"640\" height=\"310\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">NOAA-20 VIIRS True Color RGB and Infrared Window (11.45 \u00b5m) images at 0541 UTC [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>30-meter resolution Landsat-8 False Color RGB imagery <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/04\/220419_Landsat8_orbit_paths.gif\"><strong>valid at 0252 UTC<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> provided an even more detailed view of the dark burn scar &#8212; in addition, the active fire front appeared as brighter shades of pink to red along the eastern and southeastern flanks.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/04\/220419_0252utc_landsat8_falseColorRGB_Mongolia_fire.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/04\/220419_0252utc_landsat8_falseColorRGB_Mongolia_fire.png\" width=\"640\" height=\"310\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Landsat-8 False Color image at 0252 UTC [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>After sunset, the northern flank of the fire continued to burn at an intense rate, judging from the thermal signature seen in Himawari-8 Shortwave Infrared images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.
