{"id":45607,"date":"2022-04-05T22:59:00","date_gmt":"2022-04-05T22:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=45607"},"modified":"2022-12-09T17:18:53","modified_gmt":"2022-12-09T17:18:53","slug":"grass-fire-in-oklahoma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/45607","title":{"rendered":"Grassland fire in the Oklahoma Panhandle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/04\/220405_goes16_visible_shortwaveInfrared_firePower_fireTemperature_OK_grass_fire_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/04\/oo-20220405_194524.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"310\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 \u201cRed\u201d Visible (0.64 \u00b5m, top left), Shortwave Infrared (3.9 \u00b5m, top right), Fire Power (bottom left) and Fire Temperature (bottom right) [click to play animated GIF | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/04\/220405_goes16_visible_shortwaveInfrared_firePower_fireTemperature_OK_grass_fire_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>1-minute <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/23225\"><strong>Mesoscale Domain Sector<\/strong><\/a> GOES-16 <em>(GOES-East)<\/em> \u201cRed\u201d Visible (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band02.pdf\"><strong>0.64 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) and Shortwave Infrared (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band07.pdf\"><strong>3.9 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images along with 5-minute Fire Power and Fire Temperature products <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> displayed the smoke plume and thermal signature of a grassland fire that rapidly intensified and spread across parts of western Beaver County (located in the Oklahoma Panhandle) on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20220405.html\"><strong>05 April 2022<\/strong><\/a>. <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">The Fire Temperature and Fire Power derived products are components of the GOES Fire Detection and Characterization Algorithm <a href=\"http:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/training_sessions\/goes_r_fire_surface_properties\/video\/presentation_html5.html?lms=1\"><strong>FDCA<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span> Thermal signatures became evident around 1700 UTC or Noon CDT; within about 2 hours this fire was already burning very hot,<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u00a0with 3.9 \u00b5m Shortwave Infrared brightness temperatures reaching 138.71\u00baC \u2014 the saturation temperature of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/spacesegment\/abi.html\"><strong><span class=\"r-18u37iz\"><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\" dir=\"ltr\">ABI<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"> Band 7 detectors \u2014 around 1915 UTC.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A strong cold front was moving southward across the High Plains during the day (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/04\/220405_surface_analyses_anim.gif\"><strong>surface analyses<\/strong><\/a>) &#8212; and arrived at the grass fire&#8217;s location just after 2000 UTC (causing a brief flare-up of the fire thermal signatures, and a final pyrocumulus pulse). The surge of colder air behind the cold front showed up as darker shades of green in the 3.9 <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u00b5m<\/span> images. Th initial east-southeastward expansion of the hot thermal 3.9 <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u00b5m<\/span> signature quickly transitioned to a south-southwestward expansion in the wake of the frontal passage.<\/p>\n<p>1-minute GOES-16 True Color RGB images created using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/software\/geo2grid\/\"><strong>Geo2Grid<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed the initial eastward spread of the smoke plume prior to the arrival of the cold front &#8212; followed by a pronounced south-southwestward transport of smoke from the fire source region after the cold front moved across the area.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/04\/220405_goes16_trueColorRGB_OK_grass_fire_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/04\/GOES-16_ABI_RadC_true_color_2022095_210117Z.png\" width=\"640\" height=\"520\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 True Color RGB images [click to play animated GIF | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/04\/220405_goes16_trueColorRGB_OK_grass_fire_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>The polar-orbiting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/NPP\/main\/index.html\"><strong>Suomi-NPP<\/strong><\/a> satellite passed over that region around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/datacenter\/polar_orbit_tracks\/data\/NPP\/2022\/2022_04_05_095\/NA.gif\"><strong>1923 UTC<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; a toggle between True Color and False Color RGB images is shown below.
