The image above shows VIIRS true-color imagery from Suomi-NPP (taken from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ge.ssec.wisc.edu\/viirs-today\">VIIRS Today<\/a> website).  Mostly clear skies over most of Superior on <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/03\/npp.14March2022.TrueColor.143.250m.SuperiorLogo.png\">14 March<\/a> allowed for better estimates of ice cover on that day from VIIRS (more clouds were present on <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/03\/npp.15March2022.TrueColor.143.250m.SuperiorLogo.png\">15 March<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ice-cover mapping from NOAA&#8217;s GLERL (The Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory), shown below (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.glerl.noaa.gov\/data\/ice\/#currentConditions\">from this website<\/a>) also shows extensive ice cover over Lake Superior. The present maximum is the largest ice extent of the season &#8212; and the ice cover is greater than normal. The image below shows the Normalized Radar Cross Section (NRCS) from 15 March 2022 just before 1200 UTC. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov\/socd\/mecb\/sar\/AKDEMO_products\/APL_winds\/great_lakes\/index.html\">Link<\/a>).  The mp4 animation below, using images from that website, shows the 11 most recent Lake Superior images of NRCS, ending at ca. 1200 UTC on 15 March.
