The Probability of Moderate or Greater (MOG) Turbulence correctly peaked at values of 70-80% during the course of the day in the general vicinity of the banner cloud &#8212; including around the time of a pilot report of Moderate Turbulence at 38,000 feet at <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/03\/220314_1341utc_goes16_waterVapor_turbulenceProbability_MT_anim.gif\"><strong>1341 UTC<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A GOES-16 Cloud Top Height derived product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicated that the banner cloud tops were in the 37,000-40,000 feet range <em>(darker blue enhancement)<\/em> &#8212; the altitude of many pilot reports of turbulence that day.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/03\/220314_goes16_cloudTopHeight_MT_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/03\/mt_cth-20220314_134117.png\" width=\"640\" height=\"310\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 Cloud Top Height derived product, with plots of pilot-reported turbulence [click to play animated GIF | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/03\/220314_goes16_cloudTopHeight_MT_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GOES-16 (GOES-East) Mid-level Water Vapor (6.9 \u00b5m) images along with a Turbulence Probability product (above) showed the formation of a banner cloud in northwestern Montana on 14 March 2022 &#8212; this orographic cloud feature appeared to be anchored to the Lewis Range and Sawtooth Range, which rise to elevations of 8,000-9,000 feet.
