A comparison of AWIPS images of the 1-km resolution MODIS visible channel and a false color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) image <strong><em>(above)<\/em><\/strong> confirms that the brighter features seen on the visible image over the nearshore waters (from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Chicago, Illinois to Gary, Indiana) were indeed lake ice <em>(snow cover and ice appear as darker red features on the MODIS false color RGB image)<\/em>. This example offers a glimpse at the type of RGB image capability that should be available with the upcoming AWIPS II software.<\/p>\n<p>A closer view using 250-meter resolution true color images from the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ge.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php?satellite=t1&#038;product=true_color&#038;date=2010_01_28_028&#038;overlay_sector=false&#038;overlay_state=true&#038;overlay_coastline=true&#038;sector=USA3&#038;resolution=2000m\">SSEC MODIS Today<\/a><\/strong> site (below) revealed that the northwesterly surface winds were causing a small amount of motion of the ice field between the time of the Terra satellite overpass <em>(17:11 UTC or 11:11 am local time)<\/em> and the Aqua satellite overpass <em>(18:54 UTC or 12:54 pm local time)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/01\/100128_modis_truecolor_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS true color images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/01\/100128_modis_truecolor_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS true color images\" width=\"480\" height=\"420\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS true color images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A comparison of the 18:54 UTC Aqua MODIS true color and false color images <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> again confirms that the features seen over the nearshore waters were indeed lake ice &#8212; snow cover and ice appear as cyan-colored features on this particular false color imagery.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/01\/100128_modis_truecolor_falsecolor_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS true color and false color images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/01\/100128_modis_truecolor_falsecolor_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS true color and false color images\" width=\"480\" height=\"420\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS true color and false color images<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A story on the National Weather Service Milwaukee\/Sullivan website highlighted the appearance of ice on Lake Michigan on MODIS imagery on 28 January 2010.
