This cloud feature was formed by a vertically-propagating internal gravity wave that resulted from the interaction of strong post-cold-frontal northwesterly winds with the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/01\/mn_topo-20220119_064617.png\"><strong>topography<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0of the shoreline \u2014 the terrain quickly drops from an elevation of about 2000 feet above sea level (over northeastern Minnesota) to about 600 feet above sea level (over Lake Superior) in a very short distance.<\/p>\n<p>In a toggle between GOES-16 Water Vapor and Suomi-NPP VIIRS Infrared Window images at 1811 UTC <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>, the coldest cloud-top infrared brightness temperatures were around -40\u00baC (lime green enhancement).<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/01\/220119_1811utc_goes16_waterVapor_suomiNPP_viirs_infrared_MN_standing_wave_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2022\/01\/220119_1811utc_goes16_waterVapor_suomiNPP_viirs_infrared_MN_standing_wave_anim.gif\" width=\"640\" height=\"310\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 Mid-level Water Vapor (6.9 \u00b5m) and Suomi-NPP VIIRS Infrared Window (11.45 \u00b5m) images at 1811 UTC [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>A northwest-to-southeast oriented cross section of RAP40 model fields along line segment F-F\u2019 <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0showed a deep pocket of positive Omega\u00a0<em>(upward vertical motion, yellow to red colors)<\/em> that corresponded to the cloud band along Minnesota&#8217;s Lake Superior shoreline. Note that this Omega feature was vertically tilted in an \u201cupshear\u201d direction <em>(toward the northwest),<\/em> and extended upward to the 400-500 hPa pressure level.
