This Invest Area has been percolating for much of the week.  Despite low values of shear (shown below, from <a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/real-time\/windmain.php?&amp;basin=austeast&amp;sat=wgms&amp;prod=wvir&amp;zoom=&amp;time=\">this website<\/a>) and warm sea-surface temperatures, intensification to a tropical depression has not yet occurred (see <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/01\/JTWCDiscussionInvest99P_ABPW10_1800_7January.png\">this discussion<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoc.navy.mil\/jtwc\/jtwc.html\">Joint Typhoon Warning Center<\/a>).  However, GLM observations of Flash Extent Density (FED) do show occasional lightning events within the developing system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/01\/WindShear_1800UTC_07Jan2022.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"880\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/01\/WindShear_1800UTC_07Jan2022.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44125\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Diagnosed wind shear, 1800 UTC on 07 January 2022 (Click to enlarge)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upper-level water vapor imagery (GOES-17 Band 8, at 6.19 \u00b5m), below, from 1940 UTC, shows a distinct cirrus overcast at about 17 S, 172 E.
