The <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/12\/211228_00utc_kmpx_250speed_climatology.png\"><strong>205 knots<\/strong><\/a> at Chanhassen Minnesota was a 250 hPa record maximum speed for all 00 UTC rawinsondes on 28 December at that site, as was the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/12\/211228_00z_kgrb_250spd_climatology.png\"><strong>207 knots<\/strong><\/a> at Green Bay, Wisconsin. GOES-16 <em>(GOES-East)<\/em> Upper-level Water Vapor (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band08.pdf\"><strong>6.2 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images with plots of <a href=\"http:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/training_sessions\/goes_r_derived_motion_vectors\/\"><strong>Derived Motion Winds<\/strong><\/a> (DMW) <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed this jet streak as it moved over the Chanhassen (KMPX) and Green Bay (KGRB) areas.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/12\/211228_goes16_waterVapor_derivedMotionWinds_WI_MI_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/12\/wi_mi_wv_dmw-20211228_120117.png\" width=\"640\" height=\"310\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 Upper-level Water Vapor images, with plots of Derived Motion Winds and contours of RAP model Maximum Wind Speed isotachs [click to play animated GIF | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/12\/211228_goes16_waterVapor_derivedMotionWinds_WI_MI_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>12 hours later, the tail end of the still <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/12\/211228_12utc_250hPa_speed_anomaly.png\"><strong>anomalously-strong<\/strong><\/a> 250 hPa jet streak (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/12\/211228_12utc_250hPa.gif\"><strong>analysis<\/strong><\/a>) was moving across Wisconsin and Michigan on the morning of 28 December. The <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/12\/211228_12z_kgrb_250spd_climatology.png\"><strong>187 knots<\/strong><\/a> at Green Bay, Wisconsin was a 250 hPa record for 12 UTC rawinsondes on 28 December at that site, as was the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/12\/211228_12utc_kapx_250speed_climatology.png\"><strong>181 knots<\/strong><\/a> at Gaylord, Michigan. GOES-16 Upper-level Water Vapor images with plots of Derived Motion Winds and contours of RUC40 model maximum wind speeds <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed this jet streak as it moved over the Green Bay (KGRB) and Gaylord (KAPX) areas.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of 3 DMWs over Wisconsin and Michigan having speeds in excess of 180 knots are shown below.
