{"id":438,"date":"2007-07-23T23:59:24","date_gmt":"2007-07-23T23:59:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/2007\/07\/23\/rapid-warming-of-southern-lake-michigan-water-temperatures\/"},"modified":"2020-01-29T16:14:27","modified_gmt":"2020-01-29T16:14:27","slug":"rapid-warming-of-southern-lake-michigan-water-temperatures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/438","title":{"rendered":"Rapid warming of southern Lake Michigan water temperatures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"AWIPS MODIS SST image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/070723_45007.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"AWIPS MODIS SST image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/070723_45007.jpg\" alt=\"AWIPS MODIS SST image\" width=\"640\" height=\"609\" align=\"middle\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An AWIPS image of the MODIS Sea Surface Temperature (<strong>SST<\/strong>) product <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> revealed a pocket of warmer SST values <em>(72-75\u00baF or 22-24\u00baC, orange enhancement)<\/em> over the mid-lake waters of southern Lake Michigan during the afternoon (around 19:41 UTC, or 2:41 PM local time) on <a title=\"23 July 2007 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20070723.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>23 July 2007<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An animation of daily MODIS SST images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicates that this particular warm water feature was not evident on afternoon MODIS SST imagery over southern Lake Michigan on <a title=\"20 July MODIS SST image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/Lake_Michigan_AQUA_20_Jul_2007_1903_SST.GIF.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>20 July<\/strong><\/a> or <a title=\"21 July MODIS SST image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/Lake_Michigan_AQUA_21_Jul_2007_1808_SST.GIF.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>21 July<\/strong><\/a>, but the water temperatures did begin to increase over that general region on <a title=\"22 July MODIS SST image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/Lake_Michigan_AQUA_22_Jul_2007_1850_SST.GIF.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>22 July<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"MODIS SST images (Animated GIF)\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/lake_michigan_modis_sst_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"MODIS SST images (Animated GIF)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/lake_michigan_modis_sst_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS SST images (Animated GIF)\" width=\"641\" height=\"641\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A time series plot <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> of the air temperature and water temperature from the southern Lake Michigan Buoy 45007 <em>(data courtesy of the <strong><a title=\"National Data Buoy Center\" href=\"http:\/\/ndbc.noaa.gov\/station_page.php?station=45007\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Data Buoy Center<\/a><\/strong>) <\/em>shows that water temperatures at that location (along the northern fringe of the warm SST feature) warmed at a rate of nearly 1\u00baF per hour during the afternoon hours on 23 July (with a total increase of 9\u00baF or 5\u00baC in the 12-hour period from 12:00-00:00 UTC). It is interesting to note that the Buoy 45007 water temperature <em>(blue; measured at 0.6 meter below the site elevation)<\/em> warmed more quickly than the Buoy 45007 air temperature <em>(red; measured at 4 meters above the site elevation)<\/em> during the daytime hours (12 GMT to 00 GMT) on both on 22 July and 23 July. Relatively <strong><a title=\"Buoy 45007 wind speed plot\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/45007_wind_speed.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">light winds<\/a><\/strong> <em>(4 knots or less)<\/em> and <a title=\"Buoy 45007 wave heights\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/45007_wave_height.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>low wave heights<\/strong><\/a> during the morning and afternoon allowed for such a rapid warming of the lake&#8217;s &#8220;skin temperature&#8221; <em>(a similar diurnal change in SST values over the Gulf of Mexico and the western Atlantic Ocean &#8212; as much as 3 K (5\u00baF) in regions of light winds &#8212; was previously reported using GOES-8\/GOES-9 IR satellite data <strong>[<\/strong><a title=\"SST using GOES-8\/GOES-9 data (BAMS paper)\" href=\"http:\/\/ams.allenpress.com\/archive\/1520-0477\/80\/6\/pdf\/i1520-0477-80-6-1127.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Wu, Menzel, and Wade, 1999<\/strong><\/a><strong>]<\/strong>).<\/em> The maximum MODIS SST values of 77\u00baF (25\u00baC) seen on 23 July were the warmest observed over southern Lake Michigan during the <a title=\"8-day MODIS SST composite image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/070724_aqua_8day_sst.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>8-day period from 17-24 July<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Buoy 45007 air and water temperature data\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/45007.001.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Buoy 45007 air and water temperature\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/45007.001.png\" alt=\"Buoy 45007 air and water temperature\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" align=\"middle\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An AWIPS image of the MODIS Sea Surface Temperature (SST) product (above) revealed a pocket of warmer SST values (72-75\u00baF or 22-24\u00baC, orange enhancement) over the mid-lake waters of southern Lake Michigan during the afternoon (around 19:41 UTC, or 2:41 PM local time) on 23 July 2007.
