{"id":436,"date":"2007-07-20T12:09:08","date_gmt":"2007-07-20T12:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/2007\/07\/20\/wildfires-in-idahonevada\/"},"modified":"2007-07-21T16:14:22","modified_gmt":"2007-07-21T16:14:22","slug":"wildfires-in-idahonevada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/436","title":{"rendered":"Wildfires in Idaho\/Nevada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/070720_goes_modis_ir_fires.jpg\" title=\"AWIPS GOES + MODIS IR images\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/070720_goes_modis_ir_fires.jpg\" title=\"AWIPS GOES + MODIS IR images\" alt=\"AWIPS GOES + MODIS IR images\" align=\"middle\" height=\"457\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Increasing wildfire activity was noted across parts of the Great Basin region of the western US on <strong>20 July 2007<\/strong>  &#8212; according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nifc.gov\/fire_info\/nfn.htm\" title=\"National Fire Interagency Center\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>National Fire Interagency Center<\/strong><\/a>, there were 43 large fires burning in the states of Idaho and Nevada on that day (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/070720_hms.jpg\" title=\"NOAA HMS product\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>NOAA HMS fire and smoke product<\/strong><\/a>). AWIPS images of the GOES and MODIS 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m\/3.7\u00c2\u00b5m IR channels   <em><strong>(above; top 2 image panels)<\/strong> <\/em>and the 10.7\u00c2\u00b5m\/11.0\u00c2\u00b5m<em> (&#8220;IR window&#8221;)<\/em>  channels <em><strong>(above; bottom 2 image panels)<\/strong><\/em> showed a cluster of active fires straddling the Idaho\/Nevada border around 05:30 UTC. The 4-km resolution GOES 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m IR image <em><strong>(upper left panel)<\/strong><\/em> showed 3 separate areas of somewhat warm &#8220;fire hot spots&#8221; <em>(dark grey to black  pixels)<\/em>, while the 1-km resolution MODIS 3.7\u00c2\u00b5m IR image <em><strong>(upper right panel)<\/strong><\/em> revealed a larger number of more intense &#8220;fire hot spots&#8221; <em>(black to yellow to red pixels)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Since the areal coverage and intensity of the GOES hot spots was diminishing during the nighttime hours, the GOES-derived <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/burn\/wfabba\/wfabba_pacifcnw.html\" title=\"Wildfire ABBA\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Wildfire ABBA<\/strong><\/a> product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> did not indicate any fire activity along the Idaho\/Nevada border region around 05:30 UTC; therefore, the 1-km resolution MODIS 3.7\u00c2\u00b5m IR imagery shown above would have been the only satellite-based  diagnostic of fire activity at that particular time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/070720_0530_g11_wfabba.jpg\" title=\"GOES-11 Wildfire ABBA product\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/070720_0530_g11_wfabba.jpg\" title=\"GOES-11 Wildfire ABBA product\" alt=\"GOES-11 Wildfire ABBA product\" align=\"middle\" height=\"519\" width=\"480\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Increasing wildfire activity was noted across parts of the Great Basin region of the western US on 20 July 2007 &#8212; according to the National Fire Interagency Center, there were 43 large fires burning in the states of Idaho and Nevada on that day (NOAA HMS fire and smoke product).
