{"id":433,"date":"2007-07-16T23:59:01","date_gmt":"2007-07-16T23:59:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/2007\/07\/16\/hurricane-cosme\/"},"modified":"2007-07-17T21:33:08","modified_gmt":"2007-07-17T21:33:08","slug":"hurricane-cosme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/433","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Cosme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/cosme_anim.gif\" title=\"GOES-11 visible images (animated GIF)\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/cosme_anim.gif\" title=\"GOES-11 visible images (animated GIF)\" alt=\"GOES-11 visible images (animated GIF)\" align=\"middle\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 2007 tropical cyclone season has been rather <strike>boring<\/strike> quiet in both the Atlantic and East Pacific basins so far&#8230;but on <strong>16 July 2007<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/archive\/2007\/COSME.shtml?\" title=\"Cosme\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Cosme<\/strong><\/a>  became the first East Pacific hurricane of the season (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/cosme_global_mosaic_ir.jpg\" title=\"IR global mosaic image\" target=\"_blank\">about 1600 miles east-southeast of Hawaii<\/a><\/strong>). It is interesting to note that only 4 previous East Pacific tropical cyclone seasons have had their first hurricane form <em>later<\/em> than Cosme. An animation of GOES-11 visible imagery <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed some hints of an eye from 19:00-21:00 UTC, but subsequent convective bursts around the core of the storm masked the presence of an eye after that time. The CIMSS <em><strong>&#8220;TCTrak&#8221;<\/strong><\/em> analysis tool <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicated that Hurricane Cosme existed in an environment of relatively weak <em>deep-layer (200-850 hPa) wind shear<\/em>, which was a factor that aided in the slow intensification to hurricane strength during the day.
