One obvious problem associated with this internal contamination was a &#8220;rollover&#8221; of warm 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m IR brightness temperatures, such that they were incorrectly displayed as very <em>cold<\/em> temperatures. This problem made it impossible to determine the hottest brightness temperatures associated with areas of intense fire activity (see recent examples from the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/2007\/06\/25\/fire-near-lake-tahoe\/\" title=\"Lake Tahoe fire\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Lake Tahoe<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/2007\/05\/30\/wildfire-near-lake-okeechobee-in-florida\/\" title=\"Lake Okeechobee fire\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Lake Okeechobee<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/2007\/05\/15\/fire-in-new-jersey\/\" title=\"New Jersey fire\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>New Jersey<\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/2007\/04\/30\/day-15-of-georgias-sweat-farm-road-fire\/\" title=\"Georgia fire\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Georgia<\/strong><\/a> fires).<\/p>\n<p>Two sequences of daily GOES-12 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m IR images show regions of sun glint <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/G12_IR2_GLINT_2045.GIF\" title=\"GOES-12 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m IR image\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>off the Pacific coast of Mexico at 20:45 UTC<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em>, and also <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/G12_IR2_GLINT_0345.GIF\" title=\"GOES-12 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m IR images\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>off the  coast of Washington \/ British Columbia at 03:45 UTC<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>. Prior to the decontamination procedure at 12:34 UTC on 02 July, portions of the sun glint that should have exhibited very <em>warm<\/em> IR brightness temperatures <em>(black enhancement)<\/em> were instead displayed as very <em>cold<\/em> areas <em>(yellow enhancement)<\/em>; following the decontamination, the regions of daily sun glint were correctly displayed as having warm IR brightness temperatures, indicating that the procedure was successful.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/G12_IR2_GLINT_0345_9P.GIF\" title=\"GOES-12 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m IR images\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/07\/G12_IR2_GLINT_0345_9P.GIF\" title=\"GOES-12 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m IR images\" alt=\"GOES-12 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m IR images\" align=\"middle\" height=\"361\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A GOES-12 imager &#8220;decontamination procedure&#8221; was performed on 02 July 2007, where certain internal optical components were heated in an attempt to drive off contaminants that had been accumulating for several years.
