The circulation of a &#8220;Nor&#8217;easter&#8221; mid-latitude cyclone on 26-27 October (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/10\/211027_wpc_storm_summary.text\"><strong>storm summary<\/strong><\/a>) remained intact long enough to begin acquiring subtropical characteristics on 31 October (surface analyses: <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/10\/211026_211031_surface_analyses_anim.gif\"><strong>GIF<\/strong><\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/10\/211026_211031_surface_analyses_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>].\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>GOES-16 <a href=\"http:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/quick_guides\/QuickGuide_GOESR_AirMassRGB_final.pdf\"><strong>Air Mass RGB<\/strong><\/a> images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicated that while the core of Wanda had become separated from nearby baroclinic surface frontal boundaries, the system was still located beneath a middle- to upper-tropospheric trough of low pressure (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/10\/sts_rgb_500height-20211031_180020.png\"><strong>500 hPa height<\/strong><\/a>) &#8212; so it was not yet a true tropical cyclone.
