A <a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/real-time\/mtpw2\/product.php?color_type=tpw_nrl_colors&amp;prod=global2&amp;timespan=24hrs&amp;anim=html5\">MIMIC<\/a> (Morphed Integrated Microwave Imagery at CIMSS) Total Precipitable Water rocking animation, above (rocking animation from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/~scottl\/MIMIC\/MIMICTPW_LastTenDaysEPAC.rockanim.gif\">this site<\/a>), shows the development of a ribbon of moisture that moved into the northwestern United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/10\/AirMassRGBAnnotated-20211022_1000toggle.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1338\" height=\"921\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/10\/AirMassRGBAnnotated-20211022_1000toggle.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42961\" \/><\/a><figcaption>GOES-17 Airmass RGB with\/without 0900 UTC analysis of fronts\/pressure (Click to enlarge)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Advected Layer Precipitable Water (ALPW, from <a href=\"http:\/\/cat.cira.colostate.edu\/sport\/layered\/advected\/LPW_alt.htm\">this website<\/a>), differentiates the moisture into layers.  At 1200 UTC, one moisture axis was right across the Bay Area of California, with 20-24 mm of moisture in the sfc-850 mb layer, 10-12 mm of moisture in the 850-700 mb layer, and 5 or 6 mm in the 700-500 mb layer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1150\" height=\"516\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/10\/Advect_V01_LPW_alt_112_stepVertical.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42951\" \/><figcaption> Microwave estimates of total precipitable water in layers:  Surface-850 mb, 850-700 mb, 700-500 mb, 500-300 mb, ca. 1200 UTC on 22 October 2021 (Click to enlarge)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Accumulated 1-hour precipitation (estimated with CMORPH-2) for the hour ending at 1200 UTC on 22 October, below, shows a ribbon of rain from just north of the Bay Area to central Oregon; largest amounts over northern California are 6-8 mm for the one hour.
