The minimum 10.35 \u00b5m temperature was -47.6\u00baC at 1840 UTC. Note the relatively warm <em>(darker gray)<\/em> appearance of the pyroCb cloud in the 3.9 \u00b5m images \u2014 this is a characteristic signature of pyroCb cloud tops, driven by the smoke-induced shift toward smaller ice particles (which act as more efficient reflectors of incoming solar radiation).<\/p>\n<p>A Suomi-NPP VIIRS Infrared Window (11.45 \u00b5m) image at 1751 UTC as viewed using <a href=\"http:\/\/realearth.ssec.wisc.edu\"><strong>RealEarth<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0revealed cloud-top infrared brightness temperatures in the -60s C <em>(shades of red)<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/09\/210929_surface_analyses_Paraguay_anim.gif\"><strong>Surface temperatures<\/strong><\/a> at nearby sites had reached 38\u00baC (100\u00baF) by 18 UTC.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 649px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/09\/210929_1751utc_suomiNPP_viirs_infrared_Paraguay_pyroCb.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/09\/210929_1751utc_suomiNPP_viirs_infrared_Paraguay_pyroCb.png\" width=\"639\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi-NPP VIIRS Infrared Window (11.45 \u00b5m) image at 1751 UTC [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>\n<p>South American pyrocumulonimbus clouds are fairly uncommon &#8212; since the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/26873\"><strong>first documented case in 2018<\/strong><\/a>, only 7 other pyroCbs have been identified over that continent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Mike Fromm, NRL, for alerting us to this latest pyroCb case.
