{"id":426,"date":"2007-06-25T23:59:02","date_gmt":"2007-06-25T23:59:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/2007\/06\/25\/fire-near-lake-tahoe\/"},"modified":"2007-06-29T13:40:31","modified_gmt":"2007-06-29T13:40:31","slug":"fire-near-lake-tahoe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/426","title":{"rendered":"Fire near Lake Tahoe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070624_G11_IR2_VIS_25.GIF\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES-12 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m IR + visible image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070624_G11_IR2_VIS_25.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-12 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m IR + visible image\" title=\"GOES-12 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m IR + visible image\" align=\"middle\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The large <a href=\"http:\/\/inciweb.org\/incident\/725\/\" title=\"Angora wildfire (InciWeb)\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>&#8220;Angora wildfire&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/a> began to burn just south of Lake Tahoe in California sometime after 21:00 UTC (1:00 PM local time) on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20070624.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"24 June 2007 daily weather map\"><strong>24 June 2007<\/strong><\/a>, eventually destroying 254 homes and burning 3100 acres. Images of the 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m InfraRed (IR) and visible channels from GOES-12 <em><strong>(above; <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070624_g12_vis_ir2.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES-12 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m IR + visible images (Java animation)\">Java animation<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em> and GOES-11 <em><strong>(below; <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070624_g11_vis_ir2.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES-11 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m IR + visible images (Java animation)\">Java animation<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em> revealed a large &#8220;hot spot&#8221; <em>(black pixels)<\/em> associated with this fire, as well as a long smoke plume that spread quickly northeastward during the afternoon hours. Dark IR &#8220;hot spots&#8221; were first evident on GOES-12 imagery at 21:32 UTC and on GOES-11 imagery at 21:41 UTC, with a &#8220;processed fire&#8221; <em>(red pixel)<\/em> showing up on the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070624_wfabba.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES-11 Wildfire ABBA product\"><strong>GOES-11 Wildfire ABBA product<\/strong><\/a> at 22:00 UTC. Note that the hot fire saturated the 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m detectors on GOES-12, causing the temperature to &#8220;roll over&#8221; and be falsely displayed as  very cold <em>(white)<\/em> pixels. The saturation temperature of the GOES-11 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m detectors  <strong>(338.8\u00c2\u00ba K \/ 66\u00c2\u00ba C \/ 150\u00c2\u00ba F)<\/strong> was reached as early as 22:30 UTC (2:30 PM local time).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070624_G12_IR2_VIS_25.GIF\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES-11 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m IR + visible image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070624_G12_IR2_VIS_25.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-11 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m IR + visible image\" title=\"GOES-11 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m IR + visible image\" align=\"middle\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The majority of the smoke was transported rapidly northeastward between Reno, Nevada  (KRNO) and Fallon, Nevada (KNFL) by strong winds aloft; however,  GOES-12 visible imagery indicated that some smoke at lower altitudes was curving southward away from the main plume and moving toward  Fallon (and areas south of Fallon) after about 00:00 UTC on 25 June. The surface meteorogram from Fallon <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicates that surface visibility there dropped from 10 miles to 6 miles around 02 UTC as this smoke began to move into the area.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070624_KNFL_MG.GIF\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Fallon NV meteorogram\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070624_KNFL_MG.GIF\" alt=\"Fallon NV meteorogram\" title=\"Fallon NV meteorogram\" align=\"middle\" height=\"361\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The fire continued to burn for several days; a Terra MODIS true color image from 26 June <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> shows a smaller smoke plume that was continuing to drift northward across the lake.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070626.LakeTahoe.143.500m.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Terra MODIS true color image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070626.LakeTahoe.143.500m.jpg\" alt=\"Terra MODIS true color image\" title=\"Terra MODIS true color image\" align=\"middle\" height=\"602\" width=\"482\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The large &#8220;Angora wildfire&#8221; began to burn just south of Lake Tahoe in California sometime after 21:00 UTC (1:00 PM local time) on 24 June 2007, eventually destroying 254 homes and burning 3100 acres.
