GOES-11 10.7\u00c2\u00b5m InfraRed (IR) imagery <em><strong>(above; <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070616_g11_ir4.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES-11 10.7\u00c2\u00b5m IR images (Java animation)\">Java animation<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em> indicated  cloud top brightness temperature values were as cold as -68\u00c2\u00ba C <em>(dark red enhancement)<\/em> with these storms.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070616_G11_VIS_28.GIF\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES-11 visible image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070616_G11_VIS_28.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-11 visible image\" title=\"GOES-11 visible image\" align=\"middle\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A closer view using GOES-11 visible channel imagery <em><strong>(above; <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070616_g11_vis.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES-11 visible images (Java animation)\">Java animation<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em> shows the storms in the Billings (KBIL) and Glasgow (KGGW) regions. Of particular interest was the northernmost  Glasgow storm, whose northwest-to-southeast track deviated from that of the other eastward or northeastward-moving areas of convection over eastern Montana that day. Also note that the southernmost Billings storm exhibited a well-defined <em>anvil plume<\/em> after about 00:00 UTC on 17 June &#8212; this anvil plume was quite apparent in the visible imagery, but did not seem to exhibit much of a signal in the IR imagery <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070616_G11_VIS_IR4.GIF\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES-11 visible + IR image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070616_G11_VIS_IR4.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-11 visible + IR image\" title=\"GOES-11 visible + IR image\" align=\"middle\" height=\"361\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The large hail (driven by strong winds) from the northernmost Glasgow storm produced extensive damage to the wheat, alfalfa, and corn crops in that region &#8212; Tanja Fransen (WCM, NWS Glasgow) alerted us to the fact that the northwest-to-southeast oriented hail damage swath was clearly evident on Aqua MODIS true color imagery on 20 June, 4 days following the storm <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>. A <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070620_modis_bil_fader.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Java image fader applet\"><strong>Java image fader applet<\/strong><\/a> allows a comparison between the MODIS images on 10 June <em>(before the storm)<\/em> and 20 June <em>(after the storm)<\/em>, further highlighting hail damage swath. NWS Glasgow measured the damage swath to be about 285 miles long, and up to 12 miles wide (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070616_ggw_pns.text\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"NWS public information statement\"><strong>NWS public information statement<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/2007-06-20_2031-2039_BIMT_010403_QKM.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Aqua MODIS true color image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/2007-06-20_2031-2039_BIMT_010403_QKM.jpg\" alt=\"Aqua MODIS true color image\" title=\"Aqua MODIS true color image\" align=\"middle\" height=\"375\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Severe thunderstorms developed across parts of Montana on 16 June 2007, producing heavy rainfall (2-6 inches), large hail (up to 3 inches in diameter), damaging winds (gusting to 89 mph), and isolated tornadoes (SPC storm reports).
