Unlike a similar case seen on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/2125\">11 March 2009<\/a><\/strong> with strong surface winds, the southwesterly winds on this particular day were quite light <em>(generally 10 knots or less at inland stations over northeastern Wisconsin)<\/em> &#8212; however, winds were <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/12\/MODIS_VIS_20091227_1704.png\">gusting to 13-18 knots<\/a><\/strong> farther to the northeast at coastal sites with an upwind exposure to the bay. <\/p>\n<p>As part of its ongoing <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/projects\/goes-o\/\">NOAA Science Test<\/a><\/strong>, the GOES-14 satellite had been placed into Rapid Scan Operations (RSO) mode, supplying imagery as frequently as every 5 minutes. The more frequent RSO imaging <em>(along with the improved GOES-14 Image Navigation and Registration)<\/em> allowed the motion of the drifting ice to be more accurately visualized compared to  the 15-minute interval GOES-12 imagery with poorer image navigation.<\/p>\n<p>250-meter resolution MODIS true color images from the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ge.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php?satellite=t1&#038;product=true_color&#038;date=2009_12_27_361\">SSEC MODIS Today<\/a><\/strong> site <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> showed a more detailed view of the motion of the ice between the overpass of the Terra satellite at  17:10 UTC and the Aqua satellite at 18:55 UTC. <\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/12\/091227_modis_truecolor_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS true color images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/12\/091227_modis_truecolor_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS true color images\" width=\"480\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS true color images<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>McIDAS images of GOES-14 and GOES-12 visible channel data (above) showed that a large portion of the land-fast ice in the southern half of Green Bay began to break away and drift slowly northeastward on 27 December 2009.
