GOES-12 Visible (0.65 \u00b5m) images <em><strong>(above; click to play animation)<\/strong><\/em> revealed a large area of boundary layer wave clouds that developed during the morning hours over a good deal of western Wisconsin and extreme northeastern Iowa and southeastern Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>GOES-12 Infrared (10.7 \u00b5m) images <em><strong>(below; click to play animation)<\/strong><\/em> depicted cloud top brightness temperatures as cold as <em>-69\u00ba C \/ -92\u00ba F (dark red enhancement)<\/em> as the storms intensified during the afternoon. The dynamics associated with this severe weather outbreak were quite strong, with very fast jet stream winds at the <a title=\"AWIPS water vapor + 500 hPa winds\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070607_modis_wv_500winds.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>500 hPa<\/strong><\/a> and <a title=\"AWIPS water vapor + 250 hPa winds\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070607_modis_wv_250winds.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>250 hPa<\/strong><\/a> pressure levels. The 1-km resolution <a title=\"MODIS water vapor image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070607_modis_wv.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>MODIS 6.7 \u00b5m water vapor imagery<\/strong><\/a> indicated a broad area of potential clear air turbulence downwind of the Rocky Mountains, with the characteristic &#8220;herringbone signature&#8221; extending as far eastward as western Kansas.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" title=\"GOES-12 10.7\u00c2\u00b5m IR image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070607_goes12_ir_WI_storms_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" title=\"GOES-12 10.7 \u00b5m IR image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070607_G12_IR4_55.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-12 Infrared (10.7 \u00b5m) images [click to play animation]\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" align=\"middle\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-12 Infrared (10.7 \u00b5m) images [click to play animation]<\/p><\/div>CIMSS employee Derrick Herndon was chasing these storms in central Wisconsin, and took a photo of some very large hail near Wisconsin Rapids <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>. The largest hail listed on the <a title=\"SPC storm reports\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/climo\/reports\/070607_rpts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>SPC storm reports<\/strong><\/a> for that day was <strong>4.25 inches<\/strong> in diameter at Wisconsin Rapids.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/\/06\/070607_hail_WI_Rapids.jpg\" alt=\"Hail near Wisconsin Rapids [click to enlarge]\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hail near Wisconsin Rapids [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>An interesting feature seen on MODIS false-color imagery <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> was the southwest-to-northeast oriented swaths of wet ground left in the wake of <a title=\"24-hour rainfall\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070608_12z_1day_precip.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>rainfall<\/strong><\/a> from storms moving across portions of northeastern Iowa and southeastern Minnesota. Note the cooler temperatures (60s and 70s F) at locations within the rainfall swaths. The tornado damage path was still evident on monthly Aqua MODIS true-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images from 06 January to 07 June 2017<em><strong> (below)<\/strong><\/em>.
