EUMETSAT Meteosat-7 InfraRed imagery <em><strong>(above; <a title=\"METEOSAT-7 IR images (Java animation)\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070604_meteosat7_ir_Cyclone_Gonu_anim.gif\">animated GIF<\/a>) <\/strong><\/em> showed very cold cloud-top IR brightness temperature values <em>(-80\u00ba to -88\u00ba C, violet to purple enhancement)<\/em> in the eyewall region during much of the 2-day period. A distinct eye was apparent on the Meteosat-7 IR images, as well as on the Meteosat-7 visible images on 04 June <a title=\"METEOSAT-7 visible images (Java animation)\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070604_meteosat7_visible_Cyclone_Gonu_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>(animated GIF)<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An overpass of the NOAA-17 satellite occurred at 17:33 UTC on 04 June; the IR image <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> depicted a detailed radial &#8220;banded structure&#8221; to the cold brightness temperature field, with a minimum temperature of <em>-89\u00ba C (darker purple enhancement)<\/em>. Also note the area of concentric gravity waves south of the eye (within the gray-to-white enhanced area of -75\u00ba to -79\u00ba C brightness temperatures).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"NOAA-17 IR image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070604_N17_IR4.GIF\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"NOAA-17 IR image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070604_N17_IR4.GIF\" alt=\"NOAA-17 IR image\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" align=\"middle\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">NOAA-17 IR image<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/misc\/adt\/info.html\"><strong>CIMSS Advanced Dvorak Technique<\/strong><\/a> is a satellite-based method of estimating tropical cyclone intensity; the ADT plot <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicates that Gonu intensified very rapidly from late in the day on 03 June (day 2007154) to early in the day on 04 June (day 2007155), reaching <a title=\"Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/aboutsshs.shtml\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Category 5<\/strong><\/a> intensity (with 140 knot wind speeds).
