An AWIPS image of the GOES-12 10.7\u00c2\u00b5m IR channel <em><strong>(above; <a title=\"AWIPS GOES-12 IR images (Java animation)\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070601_g12_ir.html\">Java animation<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em> showed that some bursts of convection were developing just north of the center of Barry, with cold IR brightness temperature values of -70\u00c2\u00ba to -80\u00c2\u00ba C <em>(black to white enhancement)<\/em>. The tropical cyclone was embedded in an environment of strong southwesterly wind shear in the <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"middle level wind shear\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070601_18z_mid_shear.gif\"><strong>middle levels<\/strong><\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"upper level wind shear\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/06\/070601_18z_upper_shear.gif\"><strong>upper levels<\/strong><\/a> of the atmosphere, which was not conducive to further strengthening of Barry.<\/p>\n<p>An AWIPS 4-panel comparison of DMSP SSM\/I and POES AMSU imagery <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> revealed that rainfall rates near the center of TS Barry were in the 25-35 mm (1.0-1.4 inch) per hour range <em>(orange to red enhancement, upper panels)<\/em>, while total precipitable water values were increasing to 50-60 mm or 2.0-2.4 inches <em>(violet to purple enhancement, lower panels)<\/em> in the environment surrounding the storm over the eastern Gulf of Mexico.
