{"id":418,"date":"2007-05-30T23:48:20","date_gmt":"2007-05-30T23:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/2007\/05\/30\/wildfire-near-lake-okeechobee-in-florida\/"},"modified":"2007-06-01T12:04:38","modified_gmt":"2007-06-01T12:04:38","slug":"wildfire-near-lake-okeechobee-in-florida","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/418","title":{"rendered":"Wildfire near Lake Okeechobee in Florida"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"GOES + MODIS shortwave IR images\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/05\/070530_GOES_MODIS_FIRE_FL.GIF\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"361\" align=\"middle\" title=\"GOES + MODIS shortwave IR images\" alt=\"GOES + MODIS shortwave IR images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/05\/070530_GOES_MODIS_FIRE_FL.GIF\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hot spots on GOES-12 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m and MODIS 3.7\u00c2\u00b5m IR imagery <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> indicated the presence of several wildfires near the northwestern shoreline of <a title=\"Lake Okeechobee\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lake_Okeechobee\"><strong>Lake Okeechobee<\/strong><\/a> in southern Florida on <a title=\"30 May 2007 daily weather map\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20070530.html\"><strong>30 May 2007<\/strong><\/a>. The fires were hot enough to saturate the shortwave IR detectors on GOES-12, causing the hottest brightness temperatures <em>(normally appearing as black pixels)<\/em> to &#8220;roll over&#8221; and show up as &#8220;cold&#8221; <em>(white)<\/em> pixels.  An Aqua MODIS true color image <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed a smoke plume extending westward from the fires, with the smoke reaching the Gulf Coast of Florida. That region continued to experience <a title=\"US drought monitor\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/05\/070529_drought_monitor.jpg\"><strong>extreme drought conditions<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; in fact, the <a title=\"public information statement\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/05\/070531_kmfl_pns.text\"><strong>water levels for the lake set an all time record low<\/strong><\/a> (note how much the lake water had receded from  the southern, western, and northwestern portion of Okeechobee in the MODIS true color image).<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"MODIS true color image\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/eosdb.ssec.wisc.edu\/modisdirect\/aqua\/calibratedImages\/2007\/150\/2007-05-30_1833-1846_FLSO_010403_QKM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"371\" align=\"middle\" title=\"MODIS true color image\" alt=\"MODIS true color image\" src=\"http:\/\/eosdb.ssec.wisc.edu\/modisdirect\/aqua\/calibratedImages\/2007\/150\/2007-05-30_1833-1846_FLSO_010403_QKM.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hot spots on GOES-12 3.9\u00c2\u00b5m and MODIS 3.7\u00c2\u00b5m IR imagery (above) indicated the presence of several wildfires near the northwestern shoreline of Lake Okeechobee in southern Florida on 30 May 2007.
